Mystery Planes

Here is a mystery plane question for you.

The United States flew 5 different jet propelled planes before the end of WW II. What were they?

Here are a couple of guesses:

The Bell XP-59 Airacomet.

The Northrop XB-49 Flying wing. Here's a model of one (second one back)

Two more...

Lockheed's P-80A Shooting Star

F86 Sabre

Anybody know # 5?

If I had to guess about the fifth one, I'd say the Messerschmidt ME-261 as an experimental job to see how it worked... Probably had a different designation when they scraped the swasitkas off and painted stars on 'em, though...

I can think of four: Bell XP-59 Airacomet, Bell XP-83, McDonnell FH-1 Phantom, Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star. All flew before September 1945. The F-86 didn't fly until October 1947 and was preceded by it's straight winged Navy counterpart, the FJ-1 by about a year.

If you count hybrids, then you can add the Ryan FR-1 Fireball and the Curtiss XF15C-1
