trolls and trolling

Hello Everyone,

Ok, this isn't really R/C related but it is related to this board and these forums. My question is, what exactly is meant by the term "troll"? I gather from the context in which it is used that a troll is someone who causes trouble. Does that mean somebody who is looking for conflict just for the sake of argument? Someone who continually flames people willy-nilly? Would the term's origin be something like "So-and-so trolls for conflict like I troll for fish."? Is this where the term comes from?

I'm not a net-newbie or a www wallflower but I have to admit that I've not run across this term before coming to RCU.

Thanks in advance for enlightening me! :)

Yep, you pretty well nailed it. Generally, someone trolling is looking for an argument, fight or trying to cause a conflict. A sample would be if I started a post with "Anyone else out there really pi$$ed off at www.xyzhobbyonline.com?", then waiting for a reply to come back in that disagreed with my view so I could argue until I got carpal-tunnel.
