The Recs and Parks folks response will be interesting. They shut down a group of guys flying electric at Hansen Dam due to a small fire a couple of years ago. I am amazed at how tolerant they have been at the Basin to date.

Until facts are presented, no one has said it was a jet. Word of mouth and the Key Board can cause more problems than the fire[:@]

You have no idea what a Circus that place can be unless you've lived there. So I'll give my opinion, you can like it or not.
Been there. Visited a few times when I lived in Paso Robles in the '70's. Doesn't sound like the sky's falling.
The place is an institution (but the inmates go home at the end of the day). :)

I'm sure it'll all die down. For now, the less said, the better IMO.

It's no surprise that a group of flyers were shut down at Hansen Dam. In Los Angeles, the only place that you can legally fly is at a designated model airfield. The Basin is the only designated airfield in the City.

people fly at the rose bowl (electric) or Robins Hobby has their own flying field in Sylmar...membership only

Those locations are outside the City of Los Angeles, as is the new Glendale Field that we are setting up.

And more importantly it's the only one open to the public

The club should make a campaign contribution to the city councilman whose district the basin is in. Evidently, that is how things get accomplished in government today.

jets need to be banned!
Do we know for sure what type of model caused the fire?

Just so you guys know, Condor Field in Camarillo is temporarily closed due a fire from an electric model. Don't know if its permanent, some members are saying it is.

I love seeing jets, but I am sure it cost money to put out fires, IMHO AMA should pay for it.

saramos 07-19-2012 03:21 PM

RE: Sepulveda Basin

You have to remember that the basin is not an AMA field. It's a public field open to anyone. The only exception is when a club pulls a park permit and an AMA sanction for an event.

Bob93447 07-19-2012 07:42 PM

RE: Sepulveda Basin

But you need an AMA card to fly at the basin. Therefore if it was a model caused fire, the AMA should pay the liability portion of the cost.

You need an AMA card to fly at an event at the basin. You do not need a card just to go fly out there, hence all the crazy stuff you see going on out there.

Actually that group did find another place and I believe it is on park property up in the area of Hansen Dam, but not in that park itself.

Isn't there another place to fly in the hills of Glendale?

I like how people are saying "it could have been Lipo, it could have been nitro" OMG! everyone knows it was a jet that caused the fire, that goes without saying. from what i heard, jets cant get ama. so jet's shouldn't allowed there. come on people...major brush fires didn't happen until the jets showed up.

RE: Sepulveda Basin

We had turbines before we even had designated electric area. The cause of the fire at Condor field in Camarillo was from a lipo powered airplane. There will be more lipo fires as more people move to its power system. For the most part the foamies don't start fire, they don't fly fast enough, wait till we get 10s 5000 packs crashing at 150+mph, you will have more fires. With the budget cuts of the state and city, someone needs to fund to put the fires out or it will get shut down.

RE: Sepulveda Basin

I have nothing against jets except the people that take turns dominating the air space. what they really need to do is have controlled firees out there so when there is a crash it doesn't take 80 firemen to put it out.

fw190 07-20-2012 10:23 AM

RE: Sepulveda Basin

That is a good point. If the last fire would have finished most of the dry brushes we will not have any more fires this season, and no more complaints... I love flying at the basin, 10 minutes from my house and IMHO the best flying field in the country.

also with controlled fires we wouldn't lose a pair of shoes and socks every time we lose a plane.

Turbine pilots are absolutely covered under AMA if they are members and have a turbine waiver.

Here's where all the turbine info is on the AMA site:

Fire prevention and brush clearing are topics that have been and continue to be high on the agenda of the SFVF Board.

The SFVF has a comittee in place that is working on getting our new Glendale field up and running. We are still in the early stages of work to bring the field up to a usable point as it had been abandoned for a number of years before we aquired operations from the City of Glendale. We do have to bring the field up to a certain point to both make the field an enjoyable location for pilots, and to meet the City's requirements. We are still some time away from announcing an opening date.

Turbines are covered by AMA. As a matter of fact, this weekend is the AMA Sanctioned, Parks permitted summer LA Jets. This is one of the most popular AMA events held at the Basin. Come on down and enjoy the show!

It's gonna be so hot today in the Valley, those turbines are probably going to spontaneously combust in the pits! :)

Interesting we have so many Basin experts here but no one will confirm the origin of the last fire,,,

I'm smelling BS here
