Default Need project ideas for CF

A friend who works in a composites shop sent me about 14 lbs of off cut carbon cloth to play around with..
This will by my first composites project so yeah I'm a newb to this..

So the question is what would you make with it?

I have about 40' of 4" wide 3k 12.5x12.5 plain weave (guess 5-6oz/yard) rolled on a tube.

several yards of 12k 2x2 twill in large random sizes.. It's all been folded so no unfolded section larger than 12x24 but I have lots and lots of them..

one big piece of 12k +/- 45° biaxial.. again folded

I know this stuff is on the heavy side so that is a limitation..

Ideas that come to mind..
Make a mold of the Byron P-51 spinner and make a carbon spinner using the twill..
landing gear for my 27% Cap 232
Cowl for the Cap.. I'd have to carve a plug and make a mold..
Wing tube sockets for the cap.

My goal is to get to the point I can lay up a propeller well enough for use on my Byron P-51.
I'd like to make a cuffed version of the P-51 propeller in carbon.

The worlds heaviest and strongest Jart

I can think of a few motorcycle parts I wouldn't mind for my Suzuki GS1000

Any other ideas?

I still need to get some west epoxy and mold making supplies so I have lots of time before I get started..

I may start with a lost foam or balloon molded cowl for my dirty birdy to get my feet wet..

Neat, nice score, good friend you have there!
I'd just experiment with it, as you have planned to do...
I think high stress structural components would be a good area to focus on.

That is pretty heavy stuff, props and landing gear is about the only thing I see you using it for and maybe some flat plate laminates. Laminate some between a couple peices of 1/8" ply for indestructable firewalls and gear plates. Stick with fiberglass for moulded parts. The CF will be almost impossible to keep in corners thus needing lots of epoxy/ cabosil in the corners and you will end up with a part twice the weight of one done correctly with glass. Wing sockets would be the same, last set I made were out of 2 plys of 3.7 oz glass and weighed almost nothing, there is no strength benifit there by going CF. Wheel pants can benifit from the additional strength as they are always getting banged around but you really need to bag the mold when using heavy CF

You can easily use the 3K carbon fabric for fuses. At least I use it all the time.
