What are you using it for? If you just need something strong, you could talk to the local body shop and use kevlar from the detonated air bags.

1000 carbon filaments per yarn end. 3K means 3000 filaments....6K=6000, etc

Kanga 123,

If you are looking for the "look" and not strength, here is a response to a Post I made just yesterday. Here's the link also:

The Thread is new, but there's already a couple of great photos of models using Carbon Fiber for decoration. Check it out!

If all you want is the "look", use some FG then mix your resin with graphite powder. I get mine from CST. If you look close you can tell it isn't CF, but from a distance it works pretty good.

I know this is an old thread...but wanted to share because $80/yd is REALLY expensive! ...I can't beleive someone would pay that much...!

I get all my carbon fiber from http://www.carbonfiberdeals.com
Their prices are the lowest I could find and they price match

I make my own carbon fiber blades and propellers.

I saw them and have contemplated getting some 1K. But I saw that their 1K is actually a carbon/glass hybrid. In your experience is that a true statement?

I agree their 1K carbon cloth indicated in their website, IF it's real carbon and not just dyed glass, is very inexpensive at about $22/sq yd. Most other pricing I've seen is at least 3X that. And CarbonDeals sells 3K and heavier cheaper than that....

The others, ACP, CST, CJ Composites and US Composites sell their 3K and heavier at similar prices to each other and around what CarbonDeals sells their 1k.

As far as paying $80/yd for good 1K cloth, absolutely. It is the lightest available and is plenty strong for many applications in toy plane world. I can only guess that it is difficult to weave compared to the heavier grades, hence the added cost.. On weight basis, 1K is 10 times the cost of 3K

Yes, all the cloth I've bought from them has been 100% carbon. If it's a hybrid it'll say. They don't try to cheat you like some places. LOL

I've tried both the 100% CF and 50/50 they both perform the same, it's the asthetics of the 100% CF that you loose.
Just about last week the 1K changed from 100% CF to 50/50, I think it changes based on availability. You just have to keep checking, like I do....

If one is only after the carbon fabric look, many years ago I came up with a technique for painting the carbon look that may be of general interest.

First I painted the dark color, metallic blue in my case. ThenI laid down small checkerboard rubber shelf liner over that color. Then Imisted a lighter color (silver grey) over and through that shelf liner from a longer distance than normal, maybe 12-18" or so.

The look from3-4 feet away was just like carbon fabric. I treated insignias and lettering that way for a unique look. It's simple and results in a fancy outcome
