What is Gel Coat and do I need it for this cowl

    Hey Gang

I am thinking about buying a Piper Tri pacer cowl and plans from Calvins Classic Plans. They offer the cowl both with Gel Coat and without it. I don't know what Gel coat is and if I need it or not. Is it just a more finished surface? A Better looking surface or what? All I have found about it here so far is it adds weight.

Gel coat is polyester based and to be used with polyester resin. IMO, there is really no good reason to use it and I would just stick with an epoxy part and light coats of primer.
