I'm not sure if this fits into this forum but thought that I'd ask....

I'm working on a new project and while fuel-proofing the engine and tank area, I also added epoxy resin to the outside of the nose, which will be under the Monokote covering.

Question: Did I just shoot myself in the foot? Will the Monokote bond to the epoxy successfully? If not, is there something (nitrate dope, Balsarite?) that I can use as a 'primer' for the film?

I usually do it the other way. Cover with monokote, sand the last 1/8" of covering, and epoxy over the covering edge. That being said, Balsarite is supposed to promote bond between epoxy and covering. I have yet to try it, but it should work.

Thanks, Pylon. I hadn't heard that one My problem is that I've already applied the epoxy, so I now have to deal with that. I hope that my Balsarite is not old...

Monokote will stick to epoxy but it is not pretty, just ask anyone who covers over the fiberglassed center section of a wing. Nothing too ugly though - the Monokote highlights the irregularities of the epoxy. It is very similar to covering plywood - you can see all of your iron indentations. I cover epoxy painted firewalls all the time along with fiberglass/epoxy over balsa fuselages (nose to tail Q500 fuselages).

I thinned the epoxy before it was put on, then spread it out with an old business card to remove the excess. The plane is only a utility plane so the film doesn't have to be perfect, just 'pretty good'.

if your balsarite is thickened just use mek or acetone to rethin to very thin consistency ...sanding epoxy to remove gloss and level....use very low temp on iron

Noooooo! - please no Woodpeckers - ever. You can see their destruction underneath and there is absolutely no need for them. For the sake of humanity!!!! Put down the woodpecker and just walk away.

Hi Kurt,

Hmmmmmmm, I see you feel very strongly about this :-) My thinking was that it would perforate the epoxy layer just enough to allow the heat to bleed into the wood and not create bubbles...
