Default floats, how to waterproof

i just built a set of floats from great planes. there are two options for finnishing them. first is monocote, second is glassing. I would prefer glassing/painting, but to avoid all that work is there a way to waterproof the wood then prime and paint without having to glass? will waterseal and or some other method work? what about just putting polyurathane on the floats? can you paint them after polyurathane has been applied. I have all the material to glass, just dont want to deal with the whole glassing thing. Monocote does not seem to give me the warm and fuzzy of being waterproof. any suggestions would be appreciated.
