Default Thinning Nitrate Dope

I just got a gallon of clear nitrate dope from Aircraft Spruce and need to thin it. The label on the can does not mention what to use for thinning. Should I use laquer thinner or something else?

Thanks for your help in advance.

How about going back to Aircraft Spruce and order up some nitrate reducer (thinner)? It is listed in several places. You do know that nitrate is not fuelproof----yes? Regards.

That is what I have done - Yes - I realize that nitrate is not fuelproof - I plan to use it under the final butyrate coat.

It also doesn't shrink fabric or stand up to sunlight very well....

General rule; nitrate to attach fabric, butyrate to shrink and fuel proof.

Also, pick up some retarder to mix with your butyrate, this slows the cure, allowing trapped moisture more time to escape, preventing blushing.

Use any automotive lacquer thinner, that is all nitrate is, nitrate lacquer. Used some nitrate lacquer as the translucent part of a candy apple automotive paint years ago, then top it with a clear acrylic lacquer. You can also use the same lacquer thinner on the butyrate dope, as that is butyrate lacquer.

That is the answer I was looking for and that is what I thought. I went back to Aircraft Spruce and got the thinner and some retarder there but next time I will know. Thanks again.
