Can i use 1.5oz fiberglass on my airplane?
I heard that you need .50oz or .75oz fiberglass cloth to fully cover and airplane, but i found cloth that is 1.4oz per sq yd and its only 10.00 a roll! If my plane roughly only weighs 9 ounces right now, can't i just buy the 1.4oz cloth and deal with the little extra weight? Im saying this because light .50oz cloth is like 30 dollars for a roll and whats the point of paying that much if you are underweight and can live to add just 1.4 oz per sq yd?
Any suggestions?? PLease help!

But would it be sensible? Because my new plane is based off of a plane that weighs 16oz. If mine weighs 9oz then i can get this fiberglass and not have to wory right?
And would the weight increase be significant if i use this cloth? My plane is 3 feet in lenght an dhas a wingspan of 3.5 feet

Its not just the weight of the cloth, it will also take more resin and primer to fill the weave of the cloth.
If you don't mind the weight gain, it will work just fine. I personally do not care for .5 oz cloth, and use 1oz for most applications now, but I am adding extra weight. The more experienced you get with laying cloth, the lighter you can get it, but I remember my first few attempts and they were all heavy.

You don't have to use epoxy, you can use dope or polyurethane, both of which can be thinner in consistency. I use a miniature paint roller to wet out the fabric which easily removes all the excess resin to keep your surfaces light and smooth. keep in mind you'll still need primer if the weave is showing if finish is important. Where are you finding cloth for $10 a rol?

The lighter fiberglass has a fine weave, it's easy to apply and wet out. The highs and lows seen later when set will be easy to fill, to a smooth slick surface. When more strength is needed in a stress area, extra layers of thin glass will be bette. You will have the best of both worlds...Lighter and Stronger in the end. Build light should be the heart of any aircraft design, with strength in areas of stress.

I think OP is misinformed. The price is $10 per linear yard not a roll (base on TAPs website). Check out http://thayercraft.com/ and see if they have a lower $/yd cost.
