Carbon plate cutting

I am beefing up and old sport jet. I would like to replace the 1/8" ply formers that the wing spars attach to with 1/8"carbon fiber plate.
Question, Can i just cut the plate with a scroll saw? I know this sounds silly but I'm not used to working with it and want to make sure i don't fray it or whatever else can go wrong.
Thanks
Myles

Hi Myles,
Best thing to use to cut carbon is the small diamond cut off wheels that are available at Harbour freight and other places. They come in packs of 5 with a 1/8" Dremel mandrel. A scroll saw will work, but the blade will wear out in no time at all and you are left with a ragged edge.

Hope this helps,
Ian

+1 for Ian,
I highly recommend a facemask to filter the air as you're working. The cutoff wheel will create a very fine powder as you cut the carbon fiber.

Good luck.

Yeah, I would second the concern and warning about breathing any carbon dust. About a month and a half ago I was cutting carbon tube, even while wearing a white dust mask, I must have still ingested some. It triggered a severe dry cough that lasted at least 4 weeks. Never had anything happen like that before. So be careful.

Diamond grit blades are available for larger industrial band saws. I looked into getting one for my 9" Ryobi, but they are not made for small benchtop band saws. I did find a company that would custom make them for me at $10 each, but I would have had to order 200 pcs.
