I recently bought a bunch of RC planes, and included was a kit, marked U-Control C-46. It looks to be pretty old. Any info?

There were some large u-control scale kits imported from Japan in the 1950's and 60's. WIthout knowing more it is hard to tell you what you have. If it is one of the Japanese kits it should bring a very good price on ebay (if complete). They were heavy, hard to build and would not make a good RC conversion. Bob Furr

According to the full size plans, the wingspan measures close to 60". According to the box, it is designed for 19-29 engines. It looks to be complete, but there's no way I can be sure.

I looked again at the plans, and i'm not sure that this model has metal cowls. It looks like they are formed out of wood. The model in my link is a C-45, and mine is a C-46. Do any of you guys know if there should be metal cowls in the C-46 kit?

The full scale C-45 and the full scale c-46 were two very different airplanes and I suspect what you have and the linked airplane are completely unrelated.

As for what you have like icerinkdad mentioned no one can answer your questions with the almost no information you posted. Maybe perhaps if you could post some picture someone can help. Remember good ledgible pictures of the box art is always a good start.

I have the P 51 and p 38 of the same series. They were made by KYO (Kyosho) in the late 60's. The gumwood is heavy and the earlier plans were extremely vague.

...Definitely a C-46 with that double-bubble fuselage seen on one former...

The part of the plan showing next to the large "C-46" looks like the structure of a built-up engine cowling. The paper and box look pretty "weathered," what are your plans for this? Bob F has it right. Many of these were advertised in the USA, and some were built. The name 'Eureka' seems to connect as mfr.

Yeah, the box has seen better days. Not quite sure what to do with it. The guy at the LHS has expressed some interest in it, but he hasn't seen it yet. The condition of the box may turn him off. I doubt seriously that I'll keep it, as my interests lie more in RC.

I convert RC models to CL on a regular basis. On that same note a CL kit could be converted to RC just as easily. If the wing panels are the same length you are in good shape. The only real difference between my Hanger Nine cub that was advertised as an RC model is I made the following modifications:

1) added wing tip weight
2) installed a bellcrank instead of a elevator servo
3) installed a leadout guide for the lines

remove those parts and you have a RC model again. In fact I installed a JR radio to control the throttle using the DSC functionality.

What is the wingspan on the C-46?

I would be interested in a copy of the plans if they have the fuselage former shapes shown and enough information to build a model from scratch.

I think the biggest problem converting this model is the excessive weight. Wingspan is 60". There are 3 pages of full size plans. I'll look them over and see if they have the info you need.

May I please respectfully disagree, especially with the point that the kit is too heavy for good RC? Back in 1971 to 1977, I owned a H/S in Mt. Prospect, IL. I sold a lot of Japanese kits, both CL and RC. The Eureka, the Aristo Craft, Pilot, and several others. Those delegated CL were actually lighter than those designated RC. In fact, my first experience with Japanese CL kits was in the early '50s when I was in High School. I had a - Eureka, I believe - P-51 powered by an OS 29, early model before the OS Max engines arrived on scene through World Engines. It flew fine, just a tad touchy when landing time came. Hmm, maybe it was rather heavy.
The Eureaka kits that I sold were excellent quality. Once we actually set up the frame for a B-29 just using the parts, wing, tail and fuselage. NO GLUE! Remember back then there was no computer.laser cutting. The kits were excellent.
In the last Navy hosted NATs, Glenview, '72, 2 of the designated CL B-36s flew in RC Scale each powered by 6 K&B .19s pusher style. I watched one that lost an engine shortly after take-off and complete the flight pattern. He should have receiver lots of points for realism of flight. OOPs I dont think that DP had yet wormed in that realism of flight nonsense in '72.

I have kits, one of the Super DC-3, 60", CL, and one Aristo Craft Gruman F-3F designated RC. Either could wind up either way. The 6 has metal cowls, but I could go 1/64th ply and balsa rings very easily. Now if that C-46 is too much for ScottMcM, then he could easily get rid of it.

Here is a picture of an Aristo Craft Curtiss F-11C that was built from a CL kit. Some extra ribs and sheeting, and it flies well with a ST. 51. I kind of twisted the wings a bit, but enough trim tabs and all is well.

Just revise the stress points, and the C-46 should do very well.

A bit off topic here, but my dad flew C-46s for Wien back in the 50s, and I'm about to order up a laser cut short kit to build as an R/C plane. Maybe that could be converted to control line?

BTW, I travel to Tok 5 weekends every summer for the motorcycle races at Tanacross, and often bring along a plane or two. Sometimes it'll be R/C, sometimes control line. Maybe we can arrange to put a couple of planes in the air!

Here in Tok Kathryn and I have a shop and we cut kits most likely we have the biggest supply of Balsa in the state.
We are Balsa USA Dealers and Bud Nosen Models Dealers they have about the best wood out there.
There is a guy in Soldotna who blends fuel I have his contact information if you like I can send to you.
Fly by Wire is the best ever been flying it almost 60 years now. Been doing RC for about 45 years.
From time to time we visit the MC Racing at Tanacross .
