Default re; Cylinder Chroming

Hello Guys
I would like to know if there is anybody doing Engine work like Cylinder chroming. I knew that the late Mr.Aldrich used to do it but I don`t know of anybody else. I would like to have the cylinder on one of my OS .35 Combat engines that is worn rechromed. Maybe that would give it new life.As always your help is appreciated.thanks.

Yours

Hi Tflame - Don't currently know anyone who can do it, but if not in a hurry, after a long absence, I'm setting up machine services again shortly. Previous user name was GEARHEAD. This includes cyl head repair; i.e., glow plug thread, rod rebush, and straighten custom cyl's and pistons, rings. Your OS35 could easily be fitted with a new cyl if piston permits. I will be providing a service part time @ an econ. price. This is a hobby, ya know. Email is [email protected]

Glen Dye used to do it but I haven't talked to him in a long while. He is worth a try though.

You might reach Glen Dye faster at:

[email protected]

It's the latest email address I have for him, and I believe that it's still correct.

Edit: For some reason that I haven't yet been able to discern, I can't post a simple email address as a link at RCU. Glen's email address is actually "pmp(at[substitute "@"])wolsi.com", intead of what appears above. I regret this.

In the Old Timer (SAM) circles, Don Blackburn of Blackburn Aero Engineering is very well known for his custom hard chroming.

Try him at :

Bill,

Have you clicked your link? When one does this he reaches the home page of wolsi.com, not an email address.

Sorry. That was indeed a web address. For email try:

pmp @ wolsi. com

without the URL header, and remove the spaces..

Bill,

I can and will try what you suggest. It's too bad that I can't just put an email address in the body of a post here and have it appear as a link, the same way that I can accomplish this task at other forums in which I participate. The only real problem with the method you suggest is the necessity of explaining how to use the email address I will have posted to those who wish to use it each and every time I post one.

By the way, it appears that it's possible to include that email address link. ajcoholic did just that in his post above about Blackburn Engineering. What does he do that I can't figure out.

Hey, AJC.

Just how did you get that email address to appear in your post as a correct email link? Inquiring minds want to know.

hello guys
Thanks for the info on sources for chroming. I was able to contact mr.Don blackburn ,mr.Bob Oge but was not able to contact mr.Glen Dye. After talking to both I will be sending my Cyl and piston to mr. Oge since he quoted me the more reasonable price. mr. Oge can rechrome ABC or ABN cylinders at a higher cost since there is more work involved. mr.Oge`s Phone number is (815) 286-3969 . Thanks to all.

Hi guys

There's a reason why email addresses shouldn't appear in unaltered form on web pages. Spammers "harvest" them. "Bots" troll the web, harvesting anything that fits the description of a web site. Those addresses soon start receiving spam. The volume of spam will increase, since spammers buy and sell lists among themselves. So if you put an address on the web, disguise it. Don't use the "@" symbol. Bots are not human, if they don't see something that fits the description of a email address, they will ignore it.

Anyhow, thanks for the info - I have a friend who has many old engines that he wants to rejuvenate.

Isky

You realize those posts are all over 9 years old, don't you? Please let us know if any
of them still work.

Well, I found Bob Oge's email address elsewhere, emailed it and it bounced back, so... I've been told he still does do chroming, $50 an engine, but the only contact info is a snail mail address and phone number.

This is for a friend in Singapore, he needs several engines restored. Hopefully some of the info on this page still works!

That is interesting, Iskandar. Rechroming seems such specialty work. I was talking with a mechanic who told me that their shop used to do rechroming for the auto industry, but the environmental laws and such toward chemical disposal made it expensive and it was too competitive, so they got out.

I'm a little surprised that there are no shops in Asia near Singapore that could do this type work.

This isn't just any chroming. This is chroming model engines. It's not just the electroplating, you have to fit the parts together afterwards. Liners have to be honed to the proper taper, crankpins lapped to properly fit big end bearings, etc. It's usually done by an individual in his garage - Bob Oge, for instance, has a HUGE garage which is a very interesting engine workshop. Once someone's done a few people start sending parts to him if they see his engines run well. It used to be very common when we were competing with iron pistons and liners, not so commonly done these days.

By the way, I just got in touch with Bob Oge. Yes, he's still chroming engines. The basic Piston/Liner job is $45, it goes up from there depending on what you want or need - he'll do crank bearings, crankpins, etc. Stripping nickel from a liner will cost a little extra, too. I won't post his email here for the reasons I stated above, but if you PM me I'll send it to you. He's in the Greater Chicago area.
