Thought I'd pass on a few memories.
One day I arrived at the field to see 2 guys flying Berkeley Privateers
(enclosed)
Swell looking models, powered by Fox .09, that was a weird engine,
it would run backwards, had a reed valve like the Cox engines.
It was prone to catching fire, maybe it was the Missile Mist fuel.
One other time I was allowed to take the handle of a Topflite Flite Streak
(enclosed)
Didnt last long at that, I remember the clouds going by at warp nine
and the bark of the unmuffled Enya 19.
My own favorite model was the Scientific American Boy, a profile
shoulder-winger with a Cub 049.
A very handsome model with black scalloped wings on yellow.
Has anyone ever seen plans for that?

Here's a fairly long thread about the AB. Larry at Black Hawk Models even has a kit out! Click over to his site to see, Did you know there is a Musciano contest every year on the East Coast? The Northern Virginia Control liners put it on in September. Walt comes every year and judges. They do stunt, speed and craftmanship events. It's all about the hollow log Scientific models. One of the guys, and I'm having a brane fahrt on his name, has many of the plans. I spent many childhood hours drooling over the Scintific kits in the AHC ads. Gotta build some of those little dudes! You can also still get new OK Cub .049s at Virginia Hobbysports. How bout that? Good old tuff never dies!

Control line over water, what's the story on that one?

Well halleluya!! Never thought I'd see those oldies, love those Musciano models
on the Blackhawk site.
I lost my Cub 049 in a freeflighter but got it back, the farmer who found it had
tried to start it with lighter fluid, and the plug was burnt out, must have tried
jump starting it from his tractor.
The Berkeley Privateers were flown from a ball diamond, and hand launched.
The pylon wasnt strong enough for the Fox 09, one model had its motor come
of in flight. It took a chunk out of the rudder as it departed, but the model landed
light as a feather. Good thing too, because the model had two mice as passengers.
It was their first flight and they ran away as soon as they were let out.

Actually, it has been done. Generally, you stand at water's edge and launch, if flying over a lake or river.

There was a group in the midwest in the late 1950's who flew Schneider racers. They were .09 to .15 powered and I believe they flew over shallow pools that they would fill for those races. One plane was a Supermarine S6-B that was published in, I think, MAN in 1958 or 1959.

The fox 09 was not a reed valve motor, as the cox motors are. It was a sideport motor the same as the old Brown Jr and many of the old ignition motors. It did have a wierd disposition to burp and kick backwards with some real amusing results. I have about 10 of the critters with a pile of parts and enjoy running them occassionally.
