Brodak cardinal arf engine mounting nuts pulling loose
has anybody had any problems with the engine mounting nuts on the cardinal?
i was tightning the bolts to hold the engine in place and two oh them pulled out.
what can be done so i can mount the engine and not have the nuts pull loose on it.
haven't had the first flight with it yet.
thx Dirby

I had heard about that when I bought mine, hadn't seen it, but was told it happened. In the endI just placed my engine in the right place, drilled holes all the way through, then back cut the balsa fuse tripplers with sharpened 1/2 inch brass tubing, installed Tnuts and replaced the cutout pieces of wood with a little poxy and puddy. After sanding I put 3/4 ounce cloth over the mess and finished it up and painted, you'd never know. Now it's been sitting like that for a year, but I'll get around to it someday I recon. Dang wife, kids and job.

mine pulled out before i could get the first flight on it.
another guy that flys a little north of me had his pull out while it was in the air.
instant kit again.
at firsr they thiught he put the wedges under the back holes in the engine but it was the rear nuts that pulled out.
thx Dirby.

Do they come already installed? If so, and you can back them out, reinstall them with 30 minute epoxy on the threads. If not, still use epoxy. They should stay in. Glen

I may be showing my rear end here. I assumed you are talking about the threaded inserts. If that's true, I'm OK; if not, never mind. Glen

They are threaded inserts, I drilled the holes to fit the engine then back drilled and mounted t-nuts. I just don't trust the clamping strap to keep the engine from moving around

What they said. T nuts are the answer to your problems. You can do it in a matter of an hour or less. Took me no time at all and totally eliminated the problem.

SH-Modeler reply:
My Cardinal displayed the same problem when I was making the first engine install. So I spotted the screw holes, drill thru the mounts and the balsa back side fairing, cut out the balsa to allow blind nuts, pushed the original Brodak installed inserts out, installed the blind nuts with epoxy, cut scrap balsa to fill in the back side, sanded, then spot covered with similar covering and flew it. Its been going that way for two years now. But you are sure right on, that a modification will put your mind at ease.
Happy New Year.
