Ultra R/C 29% Giles 202, in ICU
This is an Ultra RC 29% Giles 202. (Ibelieve 29%anyways)
Iwas not around when it crashed, so Ido not know exactly what happened. Iwas offered the wreck, but Ireally dont think the owner really thought it would even be possible to salvage. In fact, when dropped off to me Ithink he was expecting me to laugh it all the way to the trash can And really, Iam suprized the thing survived as long as it did, avoiding the trash can. Its bad.
So here is my latest wreck to work some magic on. Most people would see this as a sure loss, but Iam cursed and see things just a little different than most. This will however, test my abilities a little bit further.
Here is the wreck as Ireceived it. Most of the pieces were saved somehow.

First thing's first, Ihave stripped the Fuse down. Ipeel off all covering, and remove the control surfaces. Ijust hack saw'd the hinges off for now.
To start with, Ipiece together as much of it as Ican. Using the canopy to set the length of the fuse correctly, Imanaged to find enough pieces of the fuse to get the structure back. This will enable me to get a better idea how to rebuild.
As Igo, Iuse my sharp chisel to clear off glue's from any wood. This is worse than it looks even, since there are only 3-4 bulkheads that are not missing chunks.
Now Ican really get a good idea what Ihave to work with..

So far Ihave pieced together the bulkhead behind the canopy enough to get the right shape to recut, and have found my idea of the best way to splice a new fuse section in.
Ihave cut out the section of the fuse that Iwill recreate, and section back in.
I rolled out some easel paper on the bench top, taped it down and drew a center reference line on it.With that down Ican measure out and center the fuse to the bench, and secure it while Irebuild. This should allow me to rebuild it straight, and all that.
This is much worse than most wrecks Ihave done before, so Iam still brainstorming how Iwill do this. But Ithink this will work out Okay.

This is work in progress. Ihave generally waited untill Ihave nearly completed the project to post a thread of it, but this one Iam posting work as Igo, so some few people can see how the progress is going.
Feedback and comments are all welcome here.
The plan so far is to recreate the fuse section Icut out. Iam thinking Iwill cut that section out of 2 piece's of 1/32 ply, with a sandwich'd layer of carbon matting. As you see, the piece is somewhat zig-zagged shape. Iintend on trying to maintain a zig-zag type of reconstruction to help with the strength in the end. (No but jointed sections)
Anyways, this should be interesting as progress continues. Ihope to have something more done by this evening, before our club meeting.

EEEEEEEEEEK!!!! You took the beautiful covering off my plane!!!! =)
To answer the mystery of what happened to this poor beast, and risk damaging my reputation even more, here's what I did: I had two Giles 202's programmed into my radio. One was this was, which was named "G202" and the other was "WH G202". One night while tinkering with the programming, I inadvertently reversed the ailerons for the former, thinking I was working on the other one. That was error #1. Somehow, when doing my pre-flight and seeing that the ailerons were moving, I did not catch that they were moving the wrong way. Taking off on high rates, it immediately rolled into the ground.
This plane had so many flights on it before this that it felt like I had gotten my money's worth out of the airframe, but now that they stopped making them, it seems like it's more valuable. The plane had a 40cc swinging a Xoar 20X8 prop and had insane vertical since it only weighed a hair over 11 lbs.
It'll be worth it if you can restore it. I promise, from this day forward, my pre-flights will be second to none.

Pat, we chaulk it up as a learning experience and carry on, man. I've had stupid errors demolishing airplanes just the same, only EVERY one of them Ihad either built from a bare kit (never have bought an ARF myself in my life, yet) or rebuilt from a wreck that usually always ended up getting some reconstruction or whatever along the way too, making it beyond the normal ARF.
You too soon will know how it feels flying something that should hold together even with some beating
Pedro, yeah Iintend on posting progress as the (re)build carries out. I've had some unexpected stuff come about this last week or so with other airplanes, but Iam just about to get the shop back in order to push on with this thing. Ihave some other rebuilds on the Crash forum too that are somewhat unique and interesting if you havnt seen them yet. Ithink all on front page, for that matter.
Stay tuned...
