Braindead was right about the origin of the picture. It was in National Geographic. Pretty old picture.

The best I can do is post a picture of the book open on page 50. but I'm too lazy. Screw the skeptics.

BTW, I had the same argument on a general aviation forum. And the people there are real pilots, meaning that they have real aircraft experience. It took me a while to convince them it's not photoshop or a movie.

Want to know what really happened? Right before the picture was taken, the pilot told his passenger......hold my beer and watch me buzz those guys.

hey thanks steve, i really did need that laugh this morn. but no, seriously it reminds me of the time my associates and myself had a couple brews b\4 our final flight of the day, well we all threw a ten on the ground and the first one that could makeone of those various two legged targets @ the far end of the feild get down on all four won. well i dont condone this kind of behavior so im up and minding my own but cat to my left made a b\line to the stated objective (we were flying elec pushers) when dude realized he was the target, reached up caught the plane in mid flight threw it to the ground and stomped the**** outta it, they started to run towards dude, i landed my plane @my feet picked it up along with my flight bag and the forty bucks, got in my truck and drove home. i almost had to pull over as i could control my laughter!! true life is funnier than ANYTHING that can be "made-up". later and thanks again, Ted aka, flip, flop, fly!

Default RE: Incredible crash - Final Answer

I sent a copy of the photo to an FAQ at National Geographic.

Here is the response:

Dear (Braindead)

Thank you for contacting the National Geographic Society.

The photo you sent us actually was first published in a June 1976 National
Geographic article on Guatemala. NGS Photographer Robert Madden took the
shot of a rescue plane that crashed into a truck while trying to land on a
mountain highway near Sanarate. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured
in the crash. This photo was also published on page 51 of our 1994 book
National Geographic: The Photographs.

I hope this information proves helpful.

Sincerely,

Lisa Walker

Dan Vacanti has it right about the oil access door. It also explains the position of the elevator. If this was for real it would defenitley be in the up position. Also the large descrepincy in the size of the Cessna and the truck says it all.

oh dear.... round and round we go..
i had ANOTHER thought as to why the elevator is down ( other than the pilot being forced against the stick..
if you want to brake harder you have to force the plane down, down elevator makes the nose push harder and you stop quicker.

the argument is over, the pic is real..

Actually the brakes are on the main wheels. I you were to push down elevator with some speed you might actually reduce the weight on the mains and actually decrease braking ability. Kind of like a wheelbarrow. The more you lift on the handles the less friction the legs have.

It really doesn't matter. I'm pretty sure its fake.

ok, then i stick by my previous answer which is the pilot is now squashed against the consol and his beer belly is giving down elevator

so... NG saying yes it's true, heres the real pic, heres the story, still makes it false?

At this very moment, I am holding the June 1976 issue of National Geographic in my hands. Opened to page 820-821 and this picture is indeed in there, and is indeed real.

Unless of course you think Photoshop use was rampant in 1976.

how many of you guys would land a plane WITH YOU IN IT 6 feet from a ditch of a substantial size to eclips the lower part of a relitivly large tree?

for every action there is an = and opposite reaction.

the greater you push against the ground, the greater the ground reacts, this is Fn (normal force, the greater the Fn the greater the friction. the down E commetn about faster breaking is accurate based on newtons laws (unless of course you dont believe newto nand you believe the universe is held together with lots and lots of CA

The down elevator is simply a case of inertia. Objects don't like to charge there motion. Hence the pilots hands, arms and the flight yoke. If you've ever been in a car that has stopped really fast you know that your entire body is slung forward, if this plane had just stopped really fast from hitting that truck, then the flight yoke would have wanted to keep going foward, along with the pilots arms and hands, hence the down elevator. This would also explain the rear wheels being off of the ground. Its obviously real. I think some of you guys have been looking at the nude celebs websites too much.
