FMS J3 Cub Rebuild...
Here's some before and after pics of my “handy work”.
I haven't tried flying it after I repaired it (I'm a little gun shy) so I can't say it's flyable but it does feel solid and, hopefully, is not too heavy now.
Fortunately, my wings were pretty much intact but I had read that polyurethane (Gorilla Glue) and toothpicks or, better yet, bamboo barbeque skewers can give quite a strong joint. I've used that combination on my fuselage. The only new purchased part is the motor.
The new landing gear is homemade...brazed welding rod.
Good Luck on your repairs.
Bill.
Nice looking repair job.
I lost the wing struts on my J3 in a relatively minor crash on my first or second flight. I had read that they provide very little structural support for the wing, the major support comes from the wing spar, so I didn't try to repair or replace them.
At this point in my flight training I'm more concerned with getting back on the ground without damage than “scale” issues. As you can see from my previous pic's, I still have work to do!
The absence of the wing struts wasn't the cause of the my last crash.
