Rescuing Patches from Solitary
A few weeks ago I took it upon myself to clean out the Club's storage container,, For year this poor ole trainer has been locked up with no one to give it any love,, So sad, no one even remembers who it belonged to. Just think it was someone's pride and joy at one time
Many would say "why bother", but I say why not?
Anyone have tips on removing this gooey stick on covering??

Yes. FireSorry someone had to be the first. When you say sticky, do you mean it's some kind of adhesive covering like vinyl? I would try heat from a heat gun just enough to warm it up and peel. Thats how I remove monokote, and then some acetone and sanding. But there's always fire

Heat is a no,, tried it,, it just shrivels up and the glue stays on the wood
Lacquer thinner seams to work, might have to break out the big guns, yes Acetone. But I'll have to take it upstairs to the garage for that,, My wife will kill me if I smell up the house
Fire? No sense of adventure eh? Besides, I have some real ugly Monkote just waiting for a good home
Actually got a few patches to peel off cleanly,, very few

Yeh, I love a good adventure but sometimes a mans got to know his limitationsHow about one of those wood pecker things for monokote or the thing they use to poke holes in wall paper. Then you can get the solvent under the covering better.

You might have to stick the nose into some kitty litter foir a couple of weeks to draw any old oil and fuel out.
If you have a Clubhouse, this could be a good time to put on a covering demo for other guys who haven't tried it - providing that you have power (or a generator) for lights and irons.
Just my $.02

It's not oil residue that's the issue,, it's the glue from the sticky backed covering mixed with the oil into a gooey mess.
I'm going to test out a small section that I've gotten pretty clean,, if monokote doesn't stick, it's into the Fire after all

Pretty sure Mineral Spirits or Turpentine will get rid of it, question is whether they (especially Turpentine) will leave a residue on the wood that monokote will not stick to.

It has been mentioned someplace that after getting the wood as clean as possible to use Balsa-rite or Stickit or a similar product. I've read there is no issue with ****coat adhering after the treatment.

Ultracote should stick to it. I have a plane I got used that has the same issue. The covering is something like Coverite fabric, and the coloring is gooey and tacky, and sticks to the wood when you peel it off. I used laquer thinner to remove it from the covering before I pulled it off the plane, but it still left a mess underneath. I was able to recover it though with Ultracoat, and it stuck well, but since Ultra is also semitransparent, you can see patches of the other color under it. Since I used basically the same color Ultra as what was on the plane, its not a big deal, it just has patches of lighter color where I couldn't get the crud off.
One thing I found that reduces the tackiness is Simple Green. A rub down with that made it almost non sticky.

Well what ever it is, it's came off the wing much easier with only couple spots where the rubber bands were that are messy.
The scary thing is how easy the Aileron hinges pulled out [X(]
So clean they are still usable, one half of one was glued in well,, that's something I guess.
Gotta love ARFs

I've gotten all the covering pulled, I did a test patch around the nose and it did stick, but not great, more wood prep is needed.
Found a broken area on the bottom of the fuse, an ares where the goo is real bad and the wood is going the wrong direction really anyway, plan is to remove and replace with fresh balsa, also adding gear support plates forward and aft for float/ski mounts and a taildrager config.

I think the covering I had on an old ARF is the same thing or very close to what is on yours. Really left a nasty mess.
I found that nitrate dope thiner cleaned up the goo real good. took patience, wear some nitrile gloves, and do it outside. Bad fumes.
Paint stripper might be a last resort option.
