Extensions are done... Odd that one didnt work the first time... not sure why... so took apart and tried it before soldering and it worked fine.. before and now after...
Cessna and I picked up this Trunigy servo driver long ago and it's really great for setting things up and in this case making sure the connection is good before fishing it through the wing. I run it off a 250 mah nicd battery from my DLG days looong ago.
Just need to fish the wires through now which is always fun. I started covering the front of the fuse, painting the cowl and painting the cabin area blue again.. I'll post pics later this evening.

Started covering the fuse... I straightended out the silly looking swoosh and out of necessity (not enough solartex white) I filled in with blue up front... needs a bit of work yet but I should be able to finish the fuse up tonight covering wise. Cowl needs a little sanding and another spray and that should be good enough. Then a number of things....

THe blue matched when wet but dried light... oh well... im ok with it. I thickened the stripe as it moved rearward and looks better. I'm shooting hard for a Sat morning flight.. we'll see... busy tonight but not 'late' tonight.. and i'll hvae tomorrow night to get it all done.. time will tell. Sat night is boys night out so possibly Sun morning if no maiden Sat am...
I made myself a to do list.... not to to bad.
Tonight - Friday ...Fix left wheel mount... ???? on this one... I did a sort of strange wheel mounting setup I read on the boards and it looks great, no visible wheel colar allowing me to use a hubcab, but there's some issues here with the fix.
Hopefully done tonight - Run aileron wires in wing.. servo mounts are done and ready (that's always a pain)
tonight - Add two remaining bolts and nuts to engine on the mount.
tonight - Screw throttle servo to its mount and run the pushrod - adjust.
Last step tonight - Canopy glue in the front windshield.. will do this as a last step tonight so it can set overnight with no clamps, etc in the way for tomorrows work.
Friday ....Install, hookup receiver(needs a mounting shelf in fuse)... still have the model setup saved in the xmitter so that should not take much fidgeting.
Friday.... Make mounting area for battery and regulator (lots of room in there for this stuf)
Friday.... Spray with lusterkote clear the new tex that was applied to seal.
Friday.... Sand, spray cowl once more and mount in holes fitted and drilled.
Cross fingers
Ooops.. charge! and don't fly through the sun, in a turn, down low.,...EVER AGAIN..!!!!!!!!!

That sun at the field gets us all at least once.... and it usually has that same result. The walk of shame.... Whoops I did it again! [X(] Took Mr Mulligan out for a ride this evening. Like a clipped wing cub on steroids. It went well.

I think I'm about 5 years behind Mr. Cessna.. who can fly at will... it was a nice night.. minimal winds . My best laid plans were apparently set in sand......... just got home from Orlando so no work on my girl this evening... was planning to get a lot done tomorrow night but spouse is talking date night since the kids our out of the house for a few days.... looking more and more like a Sunday mornng test flight.

No flyin this weekend
plan was sabatoged by the spouse.
TO DO:
Fix left wheel mount.
Expoxy fixed strut onto wing, mount wing and drill holes in aluminum fuse tabs to secure strut

Just about done now finally
Reciver installed and hooked up.. just need to adjust the throttle travel and for shutdown
Because I use a lipo with regulator and dont have any HD switches.... in the past I would have the switch after the regulator but this meant the reg was on constantly when not flying at the field. So I decided to make a hatch so I could unplug the lipo from the regulator and loose the switch all-together as it was just another connection that couild fail.
For the wheel. I found this tip some time ago on one of the scale sites. It allows a hubcap or whatever else that would be close to the hub to cover it without having a wheel collar on the outside, in the way. The wheel collar is on the backside. I flattened a piece if wide brass tube and rounded it, soldered this "plate" to the bearing axle, cut to length accounting for the wheel collar on the backside. You do need to smooth the solder on the inside of the disk/tube connection so the wheel rides smoothly and fairly flush against it. The set screw easily squeezes the brass onto the axle for a very secure fit. Some drill holes in the brass but i have not had a wheel come off this way. THe hubcaps are coke can bottoms covered in ultra and hot glued onto the hub. I forgot how I held things in place the first time I did this so included a pic of the "mouse trap" to hold things so I could solder the plate to the tube. I mentioned before the issue of fixing this. For some reason the brass sleeve had become one wit the axle which was not an issue on the other side which was fine?. I filed down the side of the brass until i filed through it to the axle then peeled it off. Normally.. you loosen the wheel collar and the assembly slides off the axle.

Thanks.. I know some of the ARFs come with hubs that are recessed in the middle which allow the collar to also be recessed but I have not found those wheels and enjoy making stuff anyway.

That is why we are kit builders, scratch builders, designers of our on creations, and rebuild crashed or tired looking planes, even the ones that started as arfs.

I thought I had straightended the gear pretty good but putting it 1on and lood down at it, it was quite askew... left wheel a good 1/2 to 3/4" in front of the right... and it seeed the multiple small bends in multiple areas made it hard to get it back in alignment though I tried I tried.
Going to make a new set whch will go farily quick. I have half of it bent but don't have the other side main and rear support wire sizes in my stash. Both are the larger size and HD Should have it so going to have that done tomorrow. Not botherwith the checkerboard.. just solid blue to things up. Mayb add triangles on the wheels chekerboard those.. easy.

RE: Great Planes 40 Clipped Cub Kit Rebuild
I just thought I would mention Hanger 9 sells a replacement landing gear for their 1/4 scale Pa18 and their 1/4 scale J3 Cub . The Gear is much like Robarts gear but is 1/2 the price , it is around $75.00 . I think it could be adapted to fit ... One thing I can say for sure is that when I put the Robart gear on my GP Fabric covered Cub it was almost a different plane .. It made the take offs and landings so much easier...Getting the Cub airbourne is so much easier when you have decent gear under it

I tried making working gear myself on the original bild but gave up. At 1/6 scale, the mechanics were a bit small and difficult to do 'at home with makeshift tools. I ended up resusing the pieces that weren't damaged and newly bent a couple others. Just need to cover the gear now and a couple faux bungess covers.

Covered up the gear with blue and just need to adjust throttle movement from the xmitter and get the differential setup as I deleted the original model setup some time ago... Sat is the plan during the funfly

Didnt get to fly Sat.... unexpected family stuff... (i love my family... i love my family ....I......)
Just as well... double checking everything.. the repaired strut didnt exactly line up with bolted to the alum tab so it introduced a small twist in the wing... fixd that this morning and it didnt have any issues, setup the wot to idle travel and shutdown button, aileron differential, dual rates, etc, etc. Added the fake bungee covers to the gear... and it's basically back to what it was... Going to add a pilot bust this time.. but it's ready to go.
Seem to pic upload issues at the moment...
