Hi guys! Is there any chemicals that would remove old covering without having to peel off the old by hand? I know that acetone takes off the glue and color in the balsa. Maybe there is something that will lift or peel the old covering? thanks stash4466

I don't think so. I use a heat gun and pull off as much as I can. What's left I sand.

Sure, I have some "magic covering removal cream" I'll sell ya some for 100 bucks! Your gonna love it ya just wipe it on and then wait about 10 minutes and all the covering just falls right off.

The use of a heat gun will soften the adhesive to release from the balsa. However, occasionally patches of color/adhesive remain. I saw a tip somewhere, I believe on RCU. that showed removal of the remaing color/adhesive with the use of clear packing tape. The process was to press the tape on to the remaining color and then rip off the tape. The adhesive on the tape is stronger, in most cases, than the adhesive on the balsa and the color remains on the tape leaving the balsa clean. I tried it and it worked well. Repeated attempts were sometimes necessary for stubborn areas.

If you mean iron on,
I uncovered one once and started with an iron but found it pulls off much easier cold, just lift and peel. May be a few places were you'll need a knife to lift the edge so ypu can get hold of it again.

I have a plane I am stripping of the iron on covering now. I have tried pulling it off cold, it works in some areas, other areas it was stuck to the ribs so good, the rib wood split and came off with the covering. I have also used an iron, the covering comes off easy enough but the adhesive in spots is very imbedded into the balsa. I have sanded it but that doesnt remove all of the adhesive. I am going to try acetone next to see if it will cut it. I am removing dark green covering and need to reapply a white covering. If I dont get all the old green adhesive off, it will bleed thru the white when I heat it putting it on. Hopefully someone will have found a good way to remove it. I will post the results of the acetone attempt.

Its a sad reality that glow fuel works so well.

I sure wish someone did have a cheat though. I have a gigantic Nosen P51 that has the covering stuck on there like it was super glued.. to bad its bright yellow...

Sorry for asking a stupid question! Just was hoping that there would be an easier way than tearing it off little by little! Guess acetone would not work either? Just takes off the color left on the balsa? Thanks anyway guys! stash4466

I use acetone or MEK or toluene with paper towels to remove the glue and pigment, you can soak the wood as well to lift stubborn areas,Please use butyl gloves to protect your hands and skin

I use a heat gun and peel it off while heating it up. Any residual color left on the wood can be sanded out with 200 grit sandpaper or try wiping with some denatured alcohol on a cotton swab.

Key ingredient in glow fuel is methanol. Try paint stripper. You just have to pull most of it off and apply a little heat in those stubborn areas.

xylene (xylol) works well also. it doesnt evaporate as fast as acetone. it does take a little scrubbing.

Thanks everyone.........I'm an "old"bee. Tried lots of things to do this but Coverite IRONEX works best for me....still not perfect but what I chose to use.

The KEY ingredient is the nitro, it is a fantastic solvent.

I pull the covering off, the take a scrap of covering and iron it over the stuck on old covering, it works sometimes.
