Default Cutting Monokote without cutting the balsa

Hi all,

I guess this is not a new question but I did a search without luck.

I am repairing a plane I built some years ago. To repair it I have to nake part of the frame which has thin balsa sheet below. Any suggestion on how to cut just the covering without getting into the balsa? Has anyone tried heating up the blade tip?

Thanks.

Go to the TF website and they will show you how to use a soldering iron to cut Monokote already installed on an airframe.

Use a Sharpie and ruler or the edge of masking tape to define the line you want to follow. Hold a new, sharp, single edge blade on the line and begin pulling the Monokote up against the blade with your free hand. Move it a length at a time and if you stray, rub rather than cut with the blade to get back on track. It won't cut the wood underneath because the ends are never used and with a little practice, will make the sharpest, staightest line you've ever seen... If you use a Sharpie, clean off w/ acetone or alcohol before recovering.
