1/3 J-3 Overhaul

Just got off the phone with Robert and should have listened to that little voice in my head that was telling me something wasn't right.
I had failed to stir up the solids from the bottom of the can of Poyspray. There was a good 1/4" settled into the can and it did not mix in with the good shaking that I had given the can. I have the solids stirred off the bottom of the 2nd can and I will give the plane another good coat of polyspray shortly. Just to be safe I will mix the can several more times and shape it for several minutes after that to assure all the solids are suspended in the liquid.
Will post some pics after the 2nd coat is applied.

Well now it is silver,
I have the polyspray thoroughly mixed now, my touch up gun is having issues spray it. Every 3-4 seconds it starts to clog up. I switched to the full size gun with a 1.4mm tip and it sprays just fine.

Now that's silver. Woo Hoo, that means color is coming soon.....
Don't feel bad Anthony, I did the same with the silver the first time I used it. I did not realize shaking was worthless until I reached the bottom of the can.

Live and learn,
I also found out it flashes off faster with the pigment in the paint LOL. Will have all the silver down in 30 minutes. I am going to try and get the color coats down today as well.
Later!!

OK this is starting to be a thread on what not to do.
The fin fabric started to pull loose right above the stab on the right side. I was able to brush it back down with some polytone and then sprayed a light coat over that. The fin will need to be re-shrunk after the 2nd coat of yellow dries. I will then spray a 3rd coat.
Another lesson learned is do not use nitrate dope to put the fabric on with these products going over the top in the finish.
Other than that issue the yellow is looking good.

Sorry about your troubles Anthony, I sure hope it all works out in the end. Not saying anything here other than Sig Stix-it does not chemically reactivate after being heat activated.

No worries Robert,
I should have asked around about the compatibility before using it. I am sure it will work out in the end. I just have to take my time here and let things dry.

I have the fuselage set aside waiting for the fin fabric to fully cure.
The bottom of the 1st wing panel has 2 coats of yellow sprayed. The cowling is also sprayed. The cowl has 3 coats applied and it is dry and shiny.
All the small parts have 3 coats on the 1st side. Once they are dry I can start spraying the other side.

I love that little detail in the top left corner of pic #2 where the paint dust has highlighted some webbing. Actually that pic is where the stitching and tapes can be seen best with the finish. Very nice finish on that bird and it has one more coat to go, sweet. The cowl has a nice sheen as well, just think what it's going to look like with a good clear coat, ohh baby.

I can always count on you to look around and find something
I really like the looks of the color. I know a lot of guys hate Yellow Cubs but it has a soft spot for me. My dad built a R/C Cub back in 1971 when I was 3 and when the plane was too banged up to fly anymore he patched it up and gave it to me. I have loved the Yellow J-3 Cub every since. When I finally got into R/C my 1st kit was a Goldberg Cub. I built 3 of them over the years as well as a 1/4 Clipped Wing. I think I will always have a Cub in the hangar.
Ok enough reminiscing and back to spraying.

Fin dilemma resolved
After 4 hours of letting the fin cure I carefully ran an iron above the surface of the fabric being careful not to make contact. It took a little while but the fabric tightened up. Once the wings are finished I will put the fuse back on the stand for the last coat of yellow.
The tops of the wings are being sprayed now.

After 13hrs of work I am almost done for the day,
I have one more coat to put on the last wing panel then I can put the fuse up for another coat then cleans the spray gun and call it a night.
Even with the issues that I have had I am happy with the results. I think it will look good once the detail work is complete and the plane is assembled.
Tomorrow afternoon I will mask and spray the lightning bolts.
Here is a pic of all the smaller parts.

Thanks Guys!!
Finally done for the night, paint gun is all cleaned up.
The final coat on the fuse went fine. I did spray the interior of the cockpit before I started spraying the outside. Now it matches inside and out.
Here are a few pics, someone on here is always saying if there isn't a picture it didn't happen.

Thanks for the tip.
I am going to get the lightning bolts masked and sprayed today and paint the dummy engine details. I am also going to have to make a run to the hobby shop and pick up some 1/8" Robart hinges for the door and window. Hopefully they have some in stock.
The engine details should be in flat colors but I am going to paint all these before spraying the gloss clear. Would rather seal everything in under the clear than worrying about if it is flat or gloss.

I called the hobby shop and they are out of the hinges but will have them in for me tomorrow.
The engine details have been painted on the cowl with Model Mater paints. I am going to go ahead and start masking for the lightning bolts.
