I am working it, still just kicking myself in the ***** for having to do it to begin with. Going to leave it sit a while until I am in a better frame of mind to deal with it.

I am sure in the end it will come out just fine.

Just one of those days,

The patch had a sag in it where the fabric was cut underneath. It would not shrink out. I have sanded a larger area and will install a larger patch. For now I am just going to leave it alone until tomorrow. Maybe tomorrow will be a better day.

No I should have.
Now that I had hit it with the iron it opened up a gap. I am going with a slightly larger patch and will get the perimeter bonded down good then shrink after the perimeter has been fill enough to blend. I had the patch looking good and smooth other than the low spot in the middle. I shall get it in due time.

New patch is on and I will let that dry until tomorrow morning and try again.

Mama said there'd be days like these. It's enough to dampen the mood. But you'll get it so you can't even find it. Smart choice walking away though. I'm still learning that one.

Bummer dude! Never give up Anthony (I know you won't). This is a good learning process for all of us. Keep on patching... er... uh... posting I mean.

The larger patch is working out much better.

Also taking my time is also working better. I applied a coat of silver and left it alone for a couple hours then gave it a light sanding and I have added another coat and it will sit until tomorrow. It looks a bit rough now but should blend in very well.

Nice job on the repair ... should be almost completely invisible, I say almost because you'll know its there.

Not to go too off topic, but I stumbled across this iron on fabric while I was bumming around the various hobby sites... looks interesting.

Almost done!!

I sanded the patch again this morning and it looked pretty good. I went ahead and sprayed the yellow. I think once the paint dries and I wet sand the ridge from the masking tape then clear coat you will not be able to tell there was a repair.

Here is a pic just after painting and pulling the mask.

John,
That covering is very $$$. When I covered the Cub in Solartex I used just under 15m. That material would cost $335 Euro's or just over $400 + shipping.
OUCH!!!

Thanks Robert,
I am resisting the urge to wet sand it too soon. I will let it sit a few hours then wet sand and shoot the clear. Hopefully the colors will match after that.

BTW: I just ordered a prop spinner for the Cub. Should look nice on the Cub and will allow the use of a starter if needed.

Hi Dave,
I have about another hour and I will wet sand the paint and clear. The paint color is almost a perfect match already now that it has dried. If I can get the wet sanding down pat and clear then I am home free.
Later!!

Ok as far as I am concerned this is another reason to use the Stits system,

The paint has been wet sanded and is ready for clear coat. You would have to know the repair is there and get within a couple of feet and really look for it to identify where it is at.

I did not make it easy on myself by masking right down the top of a rib and the rib stitching. It made it really tough to wet sand the mask line out.

Now it is time to spray the clear.

Repair complete and successful,

The clear coat has been sprayed and the wing looks really good. Not something I want to have to do again but it is nice to know I can repair the finish without doing a re-covering job. I have enough product on hand that I could have stripped the wing panel and started over if I had to.

Well hopefully that is all until the re-maiden of the plane.
Later!!

Wow! Excellent. Yet another reason I want to use the stits system. I have a bad habit of banging planes up coming up through the basement hatchway. Almost all my bigger planes have at least one patch on em from it. Good stuff.

Yep, I figured that out after I posted... I wonder if its as a good as they say... like that oratex, which is twice the price of solartex, but pretty much Identical to solartex, for the model coverings anyway... I've seen the sample swatches of both, and there's little to no differences... I wonder if that proficover, is just natural oratex.

I bought the TTH-1500 B cub prop hub from TruTurn for 1/4 scale... fits an 18-8 prop just right... nice bunch of folks over there at TruTurn.

The repair looks good but( there is always a but) the clear coat looks like crap where I stopped inboard of the repair area.

I am going to wet sand the entire top of the wing tomorrow and shoot another coat of clear across the entire top of the panel. Should have done that to begin with but I was hoping it would blend better. Just too much overspray.

John,
I will check out the Tru-Turn spinner as well. The one I bought is a little on the long side. A Cub spinner is more or less just a dome that covers the Hub. I work in an aerospace machine shop and have access to any of the equipment I need. I was planning on cutting the spinner down and turning a new recess into it. Kind of screwed up, deal with aerospace parts all day then come home and build airplane models. Something seriously wrong with me I think.

Later!!

Yep, I think you are correct. But we are kinda in the same club.
When I was a computer tech I worked on 'em all day, and then came home and did the same.
