By the way, I flew my cub for 6 years before having a brain fart a couple months back and tried to make it fly before it was ready. ( anyone who flies Cubs knows the outcome of that one). It happens.

I'll just say this and be done: The fact is I do use rudder for takeoff's during flights and for landings especially to counter crosswinds. This was a matter of not having flown the Cub in quite a while and pouring on the coals too quickly. I think I had low rates on the rudder as well and it just didn't respond quick enough to my rudder input.
Enough said! Now back to Anthony in Ohio and HIS topic.

Anthony I really looked for the repair, but in the photo I just could not find it. Can you see it with the naked eye?

Ken,
You have to get REAL close to the wing and get the light at the right angle and you can see it. Most people will never notice the patch while they are looking at the plane. I have seen mush more noticeable patches on full scale planes.
I am sold on this finishing process for sure.

My J3 flies on the wing, pretty under powered, very scale. But, that was how I wanted it. I used to have a CW cub on the other hand that would hover. Now that was over powered. I got myself in more trouble with that than the J3. Lol.

I have 4 hrs of stick time in a full scale J-3 and they are a real pleasure to fly. It really helped my R/C flying by helping to understand power management. When trimmed out the J-3 would fly straight and level at 60mph at1800rpm. At 2300rpm she would climb at 60mph and at 1200rpm she would descend at 60mph. I try to set my models up the same way. Trim to fly level at 1/2 throttle and it will climb at full and descend at 1/4. Learning to control the descent by throttle instead of elevator was the toughest part.

Ahh, the old " power for pitch" . I remember learning to fly full scale. I always wanted to adjust pitch with the elevator. Once you grasp that, it's a piece of cake. Same applies with Rc.

Working on charging and inspecting the batteries for the Cub.
I have 2 3200mah 6v packs I can use for the receiver and a 2300mah 4v pack for the ignition. I only need one pack for the receiver and so far I have one charged and it seems fine as it peaked at 6.9v. I have the 2nd pack charging and the 4.8v pack charging. I will be making a trip to the hobby shop later and will pick up a new pack if needed.
The weather forecast for next Saturday is iffy, 50% chance of rain. But you can't rely on them to tell you what the weather will be tomorrow much less 6 days away.
I will have to get the Cub back out and re-check the balance since the new covering job. May need to add some nose weight. I also need to run the new engine and make sure all is well before packing it to the field.

Not sure if I should fly the way my luck has been going. I got the Cub out of the trailer and installed the batteries then went to get my gas can and go get fresh gas. The lines had gotten pretty hard so I went to replace them and broke the barb off of the fitting on my gas can.
After another trip to the Hobby Shop 2 days in a row I went ahead and bought a new pump and extra tygon tubing while I was there. Leaving nothing to chance.
After getting home and removing the prop and cowl and checking things over once more I gassed the plane up. The DL-50 burped on the 5th flip of the prop, turned the choke off and 3 more flips and it was running. I let it run at a high idle for about 15 minutes then checked the throttle response and the engine seems to be running well.
I didn't have time to get the wings out and get the balance checked, will have to do that tomorrow.

Anthony, order yourself some Tygothane C-210-A from McMaster-Car. I have been using it since going to gas and none has stiffened at all, discolored yes, but still pliable. And it's only 37 cents a foot.

I checked the balance and to my surprise no nose weight needed. The plane balances perfectly at the 30% MAC location. Due to my covering test I had estimated I would need to add nose weight. One thing I didn't take into account is I had sprayed 3 coats of Latex paint color matched to the Solartex over the Solartex on the Cub when I built it trying to reduce the transparency. This must have given me a comparable weight to the Stits.
Now for some bad news they are calling for icing here on Saturday thru the 1st half of the day. If the forecast does not change it is not looking likely I will be flying Saturday. I can handle the cold but ice is no fun.

HAPPY NEW YEAR to y'all!
Bummer about the ice headed your way, you're going to get the system we had last night. The temperatures got down to the mid 20's here, not good at all for the citrus farmers. But it will be sunny all weekend with highs in the lower 50's to upper 50's by Sunday. Pick your day Anthony, we can wait.

Due to the icy conditions predicted for tomorrow as well as rain the remainder of the day and high winds our freeze fly has been rescheduled for next Saturday. I will try to fly the Cub then weather permitting.
Until then my butt is staying in where it is nice and warm

Just found this thread and read it, good reading and lots of good info to be had, BUT did WacoNut ever get his maiden done? how does the plane fly? and are there any pictures or video?
