"Crash" on home built 6" diameter wire wheels...SR Batteries Eindecker
A gust of wind caught my 1/4 scale sr batteries eindecker when I opened the
shop door and it suffered a 4 foot fall from its perch above the Z3... This was
an unintentional test of the wire wheels I had just completed using a technique
I read about here!
The plane weighs about 17 lbs and I honestly was going to
use the wheels for display only... but now I think I would trust them for not so
perfect landings! After machining the hubs from 1/2" aluminum round stock, I
drilled 20 equilly spaced spoke holes on each flange using a 8" rotary table on
the bridgeport. Next 40 spoke holes on the rim...can u quess what the 6" rim
started out as? I made a lacing fixture and twisted the music wire to hub, and
passed the music wire spoke thru the rim hole and a sharp 90 degree bend with a
glob of jb weld here to anchor the spoke to the rim....
The little bmw's hood didn't fare as well... 2 nickel sized dents from the tires and a dime sized dent
from the tail skid. All is well after a trip to the local dent doctor and plane
survived without a mark!
