Some are so insanely real-looking that, without something next to it for size comparison, you would never know it's RC. One in particular, the F-100, is very real-looking; it's a $4,000+ kit, which doesn't include everything.

Guys.....
Most of these jets are from very solid designs and fly very well under NORMAL flying conditions. The problem was at this event there was a severe altitude density problem. This field was in the neighborhood of 5000' ASL. To compound matters the temperature was very high (in the 90's) which gives very poor altitude density numbers.
Some engines had problems too as the ECU's that were calibrated for lower altitudes didn't (couldn't) compensate for the higher altitudes....As a result several planes suffered flame outs.
Most, if not all, of these pilots are the best of the best from their respective countries. They have spent countless hours practicing....At their fields in conditions not even remotely severe as the altitude density problems given at this event. To say that their skills are lacking is rather insulting knowing the names of the pilots that attended this event.
Take Philip Avonds for example....His F-15 is one of the best flying (and easiest as it is a very good beginners jet) designs around. Philip has won this event before. When a guy like Philip has a problem you must look further than what appears to be the obvious.
The altitude density problem bit several of the jet guys as the performance of their jets was vastly different than what they were used to. Ask anyone that flies from a high elevation in the summer time, for example in Colorado....They can tell you first hand how thin the air can become!!!

ummmm.... Taht was depressing espacially when that first guy crashed. Waching this vidoe brought back painfull memories of my BVM bandit ducted fan crashing to **** . I hait to admitted but i cried like a little baby the hole way home.

Wow - crazy video. Exciting to watch the planes go in, heartbreaking to see the pilots reaction, and a good reminder to us all that these guys make it look easy most of the time. I reckon I should not mess with a Jet for a good few years yet

That video was GREAT and the Music too. I am still a novice RC Flyer and get a sick feeling in my stomach when I crash a $150 ARF. I would probably suffer a sudden loss of consiousness if I crashed a $10,000+ jet. My heart goes out to those guys. On the other hand, who among us hasn't gone OOOOOHHH, AAAAAHHHHH when one of our buddies turns his plane into a smokin hole in the ground? :-). I'd be lyin if I said I've never done that.
Thanx to Brian for the Info on all of the crashes. As I said, I am still a novice pilot but, I am a very proficient arm chair, Monday morning pilot and I would have made a gear down fly by to check that all 3 were down and locked and if not, pull'em up and belly in on all of that grass around the field.
Lastly, Kevin Barr, climb down off your high horse, pull that stick out of your six, relax and get a life, dude!

Ok newbie here with a newbie question;
I'm watching that first one, it seems to look ok, has some altitude and control response during its' climb out, then whooop death-spiral.
After watching it again I see a subtle stall just before it goes (tip-stall?) and looks to me to be unrecoverable as it lost all of its height fast.
So the "severe altitude density problem" = thinner air? and a corresponding higher min. stall speed/threshold??
(In addition to the flame-outs mentioned in the above posts)
they sure look like they die quick when trouble strikes.
I'm not trying to insult anybody, just trying to learn from it.

Rammstein is an awesome band! They have a lot of singles out... I wouldnt just check out individual songs.. just go buy the CD's... they're all great! ... some good songs are Engel, Du Riechst So Gut, Spiel Mit Mir, Seemann (one of my favorites), Links 2-3-4, Ich Will... I better stop or I'll just end up listing them all.... Du Hast is probably one of their best known songs...
