Amazing midair picture.
They say bigger is better. Here is one of the reasons why. This was a midair crash at our local club, the CAP 232 did land with the small Pitts attached as in photo. It was amazing to watch, the CAP did not even flutter when they hit.
One in a million. Felt kinda of sorry for the Pitts owner. But this is why I don't fly my smaller planes when the giants are in the air. At least he did not have to walk out to retreive his plane. Even the engine stayed on.

It is a very interesting photo, however, may I remind you that full scale aircraft of all types have been downed by birds.
You're right, when big meets small, big generally wins. I too feel for the Pitts pilot !
Years ago I midaired while practicing pattern ----- and also came out the survivor . Unfortunately I cut a .40 size trainer in half. It was being flown by a 13 year old who was doing quite well, with his father at his side. While it was "just one of those things", I feel regret to this very day !

I had an incident almost like the one in post 7 except for I was the 13 year old flying the trainer. I had been soloing for a while and had just gotten my first low wing. One of the people who flys at our field cut my trainer in half with his hanger 9 Aresti. My trainer spun in with only one wing. My engine and airplane were totaled, but his Aresti only had a dented leading edge. It is still flying today.

I am the owner of the 35% Cap. I was in a harrier, barely moving forward. The Pitts hit me straight on, but on the landing gear leg, as you can see. So it missed the prop. In fact my engine remained running, so I pulled the throttle back to a high idle and made a gentle semi-circle to a pretty normal landing. The plane was a little unstable in pitch, but quite manageable. The Pitts owner (Will S) took this picture. Don't know if he is a RCU regular.
After a respectable few minutes of feeling bad, I re-fueled and flew again. There is not even a mark on the Cap.

When I first saw the picture, I was thinking how close to the prop it must have been. The harrier explains it. If the Caphad been in level flight, there wouldn't have been much left, I guess. Nothing but blue and white confeti.

Must hae been a good one to see,,, Me and my Uncle were flying some little geebee products Tiger Moths on a real windy day, and was doing a little chasing around ,, we had slacked off a little and i was flying across the feild pretty high up and he was coming at me at an angle a lot lower and he pulled up to go at me again and i thought he was a good ways off but he ended up flying strait up through my wings ,, Let me tell you with the wind blowing and them little Moths exploded it was BEAUTIFUL ,, i just wish i had it on video ,, the both came down in a slow sprial ,, and the little peices just floating away ,,,

This was not staged. The actually happened at Buder Park in St. Louis. There were plenty of witnesses. The 232 is a 35%. The Pitts is some kit not sure. Prolly .25 size engine.

that plane would have to be REALLY big, the wings on the pitts are ok (half of it anyway) and (if its a .25) its probably a herr or larger kit making the wings somewhere in the 3 foot range. making the 35% there what about 12'? maybe more? i also cant beleive that the prop didnt suck the thing right up. althoug if it is real, thats amazing. as was said, it sucks to be the pitts

Yes this is for real. My Cap is a 35% carden (wingspan 102"). The Pitts was a electric (not a .25) with 24 inch wingspan. The electric motor and battery did (I believe) fall to the ground after the impact, but the entire airframe remained wrapped around my landing gear. This picture was taken after I landed without ever touching the planes. I'm not sure how much the Pitts weighed but I think it was well under 16 ounces. It may have been a rubber-powered model that Will had converted to electric. I will try to get "Will S" to post here. He is not a RCU regular...
