TRAINER FIRE (not a jet)
my trainer caught fire today!!
first of all i was doing a engine test run, but i didn't start. then i realised the liquid coming out the silencer. it was odourless, so i didn't know what it was (any ideas). it was getting dark, so i bought the plane inside to empty the contents. then every thing started leaking. so i put a cloth under the engine. Soon it was filled with fuel. (on my bench was a small gas tank, white sprit, a gallon of fuel and some high flammable lubricating oil. I noted my mini blowtorch in the way, and picked it up to move it. BANG, there was a small explosion and the cloth went on fire, UNDER the nose. i grabbed the fire extinguisher and used it, covering everything This should be a warning to every one!
What do you think
Thanks
Volkan

RE: TRAINER FIRE
I would think static buildup on you jumping to the torch would possibly be the cause, dont really know for sure.. sucks though... proof that danger lies everyware. i dont have a fire extingisher, makes me wanna go get one......

If it was just fuel, the cloth would have been just fine. It's kinda neat, but soak a rag in alcohol and burn it. It will burn itself out in a minute or two, and you'll notice the rag is now wet. Since there's quite a bit of water in alcohol, after the alcohol burns off it will leave the rag wet and unburnt. Since airplane fuel is almost all alcohol (the nitro in glow fuel is less explosive/flammible then alcohol) the same thing will happen.

RE: TRAINER FIRE (not a jet)
Yes it may have been a static discharge which ignited the fuel vapors. That stuff comming out of the muffler was almost definitely glow fuel.
Its possible for glow fuel to burn and you not to see it... so the airplane may have been on fire when you brought it in! (Its a relatively low temp flame with practically no color.) Virtually invisinble ih bright sunlight. Then you spill a little of the flaming fuel and.. WHOOM! fire everyplace! Engine backfired about the time you gave up on starting it?

second i live in england, there is no bright sunlight! by the time i got the plane in and i started repairs was about 40min. so that couldn't be the reson.
the engine didnt back fire, and it did start, it just took time. it was abput 5C so it may have been the coldness!

Hey volkan didn't your mother tell you not to play with matches little boy.
If the liquid coming out of the muffler wasn't glow fuel than what was it. Did your little brother or sister pour gasoline in the muffler? Why did you bring the plane inside the house with glow fuel spilling out of it? I would consider this a lesson learned, your lucky you didn't burn the house down.
