Default Should I try to Rebuild this?

The other day I had a little mishap and now I need to decide whether to repair or replace my Sig Somethin' Extra. The wings were not badly damaged but the fuse was crushed back to the wing spar. Given the cost of replacement I'm inclined to try a repair. The only thing I'm wondering is how hard it will be to do and how well it will fly after it's done.

Anyone with an opinion or advise jump in...

PS Hopefully my attemp to attach 3 photos of the wreck was successful...

Well yur attempt to post pictures failed but as long as you have a good portion of the fuse left and a good wing rebuild!! Now what U can do is just remake the nose according to the plans and the put a 1/8th light ply doubler on the inside of the fuse to cover the seem and provide strength. I'd go 3 inches or so of overlap so you get the strength but don't gain to much weight. But keep in mind you must re-balance the plane after the repairs. Usually will need some lead in the tail. Happy flying and you can also post pictures in your gallery

I would rebuild. Cut off from the front of servo tray and build new front part using the plans then use thin plywood the meld the two parts together. Shouldn't take to long and if you do a good job no one will ever knew it crashed unless you tell them. Good luck.

Repair it. It won't take that long, then you will have saved 100 or however much the kit is. Get some balsa and ply and go for it.

Its not hard to fix them back up after a crack up. Just take your time and enjoy the experience. I cracked up my spacewalker II but had it back in the air after a few evenings of work. Look at it this way.......it will give you some experience with working with the wood for future kit building. I repaired the spacewalker in 3 evenings after work and it still flies great today.

I agree. My Super Sportster was my first kit, and my first rebuild. Learned tons! First pic is before, then the crash, then the rebuilt bird.

Here's a link to my thread on my 46% Giles Rebuild process. I picked it up off the owner very very very cheap..........with a little bit of work it's looking good again. Check it out......you would be suprised what can be rebuilt.

sorry to hear about the wreck, just curious, how did the wing spar hold up?
if the wings have little damage it would seem that much of the energy was carried into the forward fuselage. i wish you much sucess on the rebuild.

It was bent. I tried to have it straightened but just found out it didn't work. I'm looking for another solution.

I'd fix it. Cut it off clean at a good point and use thin ply to fuse it together like the other guy said. It will be stronger than it ever was. Just use long straight edges and squares to make it straight. You can do ANYTHING with wood and glue.

I crashed my S.E. and did simular damage. The wing tube was the biggest problem. If this was an ARF like mine, the wing tube is not a standard size you can easly find. I think it is a 16mm alumininum tube. No where to be found but from Sig and they wanted 20 bucks plus shipping. I put a 24" long 3/8" rachet extention in a vise and slid the wing tube over it and starting working at it with a light hammer. I got it pretty straight and I am still using it. Repairing the fuse so the wing tube was straight was a bit tricky also. Looks like you have great start on the repair. Good luck and take your time.

If the wing tube is a problem, you may try contacting TNT. My bet is that they will have what you need.

excellent job on the rebuild, i too have heard the wind spar is 11/16th"aluminum. 3/4" is much easier to find, would the extra 1/16" diameter be a problem?

Right now the wind spar tube is the problem. I have an 11/16 steel tube but it's heavy and a 3/4 aluminum tube that's too big. Sig sells a replacement for $20.

Any advise?

Neo- What is TNT?

Good job, hows it fly now? Does the engine look somewhat crooked or is that just me? Sorry, couldn't resist.
