Default Expiration date on a Stick

Tragically, my friend who has more than 50 years of RC flying experience crashed his stick today. Another pilot had used his radio to test fly a new aircraft. When he returned the transmitter he failed to put the elevator back on high rate. The comical part is the pilot stated just before the crash "This is the maneuver that always kills me", as he tried an outside loop. With only half the elevator throw the stick made it to almost pure vertical at the time of impact. In the attached pictures you can see the impact point in the asphalt, the debris field, and of course the pilot who is not only a great guy, but has a fantastic sense of humor.

I always make sure my 8U is on the right model (duh), and i check the surfaces AND the dual rates before I take off.

Why not? You can do it while you taxi.

Sorry for your friends loss though. We all make mistakes.

I agree. I'm not a super experienced pilot, but I have a routine (like athletes have preparing to throw a pitch or make a free throw) where I touch all my trim and rate switches while I'm sitting on the runway just before takeoff.

It can happen to anyone. All it takes is something to get you out of your routine. In this case we were messing with Ugo a few minutes before it happened. Ugo has jumped on me everytime I have tried to take a shortcut...i.e. skip a range check. Just an honest mistake that can happen to anyone. There are those who have and those who will...

Default RE: Expiration date on a Stick

Now about the expiration date:

Today I was flying my Weston Magnum, and halfway during the day my exhaust header cracked (again[&o])...
So besides me there was this young kid flying his Middle Stick, and he promptly offered me his transmitter... probably because he felt sorry for me because my flying day was over or something... Nice kid!

Anyway, I take over the tranny and start throwing his Stick around a little. In the mean while he starts explaning to me about that plane: how old it was, how good it was, how many ground contacts, repairs... the lot...
As it turns out this thing was pretty old and messed up... but it still flew darn good...

My point is: the expiration date on a new Stick should be pretty far away in the future

Sorry for your loss... the tail section "looks" re-usable though...
