Default Hobbico @ 3000ft+

Well as of 6-14-04 today i managed to fly my Hobbico MKIII into a dark/grey cloud which was around 3000 ft or so and literarly flew right into the bottom layer of the cloud!!! I hid it in there for about 5 sec at the most then pushed the stick down and started to decend man was that a blast!!! I think the cloud was rainiing in it a little bit but this was the first time ever in my 10 year hobby to do this attempt and it passed. I flew the plane down entering the traffic pattern manuever and made a final approuch then flaired and voila touch down. i taxied the plane back to the pits and after shutdown i felt a great sensation and joy that i did this with absolute no problem. what i want to do now is buy a laptop with a very good video card and a camera system mount it on the plane then record every thing i did. i also want to get the 150 dallor flight data recorder system that way with the laptop available i can watch the video and see the data all at the same time. ya'll think i should do this? its the best darn hobby you can be in!!!!!!!![8D]

You WILL enjoy flying with camera and telemetry. Have a look on the aerial photography forum. I fly with camera and will setup a telemetry setup with GPS this summer. Using a pair of Olympus videoglasses I can fly the aeroplane from the air. My laptop delays the video to much to fly by the view!
Just be aware of other traffic........Have you checked out cyber-flyer.com?

Good luck

All it takes is money. The UAV's are flying because of people like us that think its cool to fly with an on board video camera. I mean where else could have that idea have came from. hehehe. Several companies that manufacture airborn video systems, advertise on this website. When I finish my 1/4 scale Mustang, I plan to put one on it. I have a couple different kinds of security cameras and recommend that you get a good color camera to start with. There are different levels of transmitter power also. I haven't heard of any problems with interferance but it something to consider. There are several videos of flights taken from the aircract on this site, the color makes a big difference.
When the olifens plant I was working at decided to do a study on the silencer on the flare tip, they hired a guy with a R/C helecopter to go up and take video and stills. It had a camcorder, a video camera that transmitted back to the ground and a still camera. I believe the guy got paid pretty good and gets to write his hobby off as a buisness expense.. Good luck and have fun

Have a look at the site www.cyber-flyer.com
This guy has been flying at altitudes above 24,000ft! Pretty amazing!

Are you sure it was 3000ft thats over 1/2 mile away!!! How were you able to see the model clearly enough to control it?

Tell you what man...I'm a commercial pilot and if I fly over an RC field at 3,000 feet I can barely make out the cars let alone the plane. I think that's a little over estimated....

And when you make it in to the clouds, lose your plane, and crash, your post might even belong in this forum

I thought exceptional vision didn't require glasses

Do you mean that your "corrected" vision is now exceptional because of the thin glasses

3000+ feet your killing us

Go back and read cropdusterdave's post again Hint he already has an altimeter in his plane and he's telling you he can barely make the cars.. Is you model as big as a car??

Well that is the web page that caused the FAA to get a hold of the president of the AMA. Way to go.

Whats the wingspan of the aircraft you flew to 3000ft ?

I flew a E-Glider to 1780ft, verified by an on-board altimetre watch, its wingspan is 1.8m. On a claer sky day I stuggle to see it at 1200ft but with a cloudy sky as background I could still see it quite clearly at 1780ft, the motor battery pack ran out so I didnt get any higher.

i looked up the weather site to see what level the clouds were and it said between 3.1lowest to 6.1 highest thats why i think i flew at 3000ft or so wont know for sure until i get the data flight recorder but then again i dont want to kill the hobby for anyone im not trying to get in trouble or anythin i just had little info about flying at that level for models if someone had told me earlier then i whould have not attemp it.
