Vicious Mid Air
I was flying my Thunder Tiger Trainer .60 at Marcham Park in Davie Florida the other day when I came spinner to spinner with a scratch built stinger at about 200 feet. We were both at full throttle, and the result was disaster! You will see pictures of my decapitated O.S. 61FX. I bought the TT trainer .60 because I like to do things like take up cameras and recovery systems, (parachutes for the plane its self). I wanted a stable platform, and except for some quality issues, it was. I think I want to get an Ultra Stick .60 to replace it. Do any of you have an U.S. .60? Do you think it will lift light cargo? How is the quality? I want a plane that is fun to fly but will also lift my crazy experiments. Hope you enjoy the pictures.

Hey Dave
Thanks for the post. I would like to buy the 1.20, but I am a graduate student, and I can't really afford to crash a plane that expensive right now. I think the .60 size is about the most spendy plane that I am willing to risk to flight right now. Do you think that the .60 size would be sufficient to carry a camera? I am going to my local hobby shop (RC Hobbies, North Ft. Lauderdale) Tomarrow to talk to the resident expert Rob, tomorrow to pick out a new plane. Still, I would appriciate any advice anybody has about the Ultra Stick series. Thanks

Yes, the .60 size is roomy....and a very nice plane, my friend has one. It would haul up a camera....no problem.
If money is a little tight....you could use a Tower Hobbies .75 two stroke for $ 99. (you don't hear much about 'em, but there powerful and sweet....I run 'em )....or even better, pick up a Magnum .90 4-popper this weekend for $ 149.
Do you have a 6-channel radio ?
Dave.

Wow, thanks for all the replies! I bought an Ultra Stick .40 and an O.S. 46fx today. I thought about the .60, but the .46fx was about $50 cheaper and the U.S. 40 was about $50 cheaper, and there is a field near my apartment that I think I can fly the .40 size in without worrying about air traffic. I still think that it will be able to lift a disposable camera. I am very impressed with the quality of the kit so far. The covering is flawless, and everything seems to be glued to excess. This is a big change compared to that awful thunder tiger trainer .60. Don't get me wrong, I loved that plane, but the quality was clearly lacking in my opinion. I am also excited about the sporty side of my new little plane. I am a huge O.S. fan. I admit that I do not have any experience with any other brands, but I have never had a problem with any of the O.S. engines I have owned, (the .61fx, a .35 something I had in a fan boat, which went into a fan car, and then a .21cv? that I had in a RC truck. I have seen people at the field messing with an engine that would not start, and I would just rather spend the $20 for the O.S. because I am confident that it will run when I ask it to. I'm sure that they are all about the same, but just the same I'll stick with what I trust.
Thanks again for all the posts, and just remember, a smart man once said, altitude is life and air speed is life insurance, unless you are at the same altitude as another plane. Good luck!

Is that the Hanger 9 version? Mine and several others broke the fuse just forward of the fin and stab. The fuse support stops there and the fin support does not overlap. The control rod cutouts make it a very delicate area. Several operables ones with many flights had cracks in the balsa propagating most of the way around. Careful on the rod exit holes and maybe a little thin ca will help that balsa. The best solution we found was to make exit hole doublers out of 1/32 (aircraft grade) or 1/16 (light) ply. Cut them in half, slip em into the fuse and ca in place on the inside.
Good luck, it is an excellent flying plane. Take a lesson from me, if you get just a little too low, the plane won't slip between the fork in the tree limb. Replaced the wing with a foam generic from Dbalsa and back in the air.

sieman,
Go and take a look at the World Model Super Stunt 60. It may be what you are looking for.
It has very nice wing loading with its 80" spread. It is considered a 60 size and will run just fine on a 60 size motor. Huge wing and comes in at around 7 pounds even with its 64" fuse.
I don't have a whole pic of mine by its self but here it is in my trailer. Sorry but you will have to dig through other pics to find it.

If you must splat a plane do it in the most spectacular fashion possible. I put my Bucker Jungman into an inverted spin, waited too long and splat. Wasn't very spectacular but what a thud!!
Like every other plane I've owned, this one can be fixed without too much problem - saves a lot of money and hey what a challenge!!
FAILURE is a relative term - it's not what has happened to you that is important but what you learn from it.

WOW!!! What a pic! I'm sure glad your piston didn't fall off[&:].
My experience with OS engines is the same as siemans. I also think the extra $20 is worth every nickel when it comes to not having to mess with engines at the field.
Amazing pic!
