Why do people like to see carnage?
I've noticed that whenever there is a crash at our airfield, people will rush
over to see the carnage. Some claim they are going over to help recover the
pieces, but some just come over to look at the carnage. I remember once
about two years ago my plane lost a muffler in flight. I landed it o.k., but
as I was getting ready to go look for the muffler, a guy at the field who didn't
see me land immediately shouted, "hey did your plane crash?" and started following
me to where he thought the plane had crashed. After I told him, the plane didn't
crash, and that I was going over to try to fine the muffler, he turned around and
headed back to the pits area. I needed him more to help me find the muffler than
to retrieve pieces from a crashed plane. It's just kind of funny how carnage gets the
adrenaline rushing. Oh well, human nature. I guess that's why crash videos are so
popular.

Yup, if you want real carnage check out the RC Cars video forum, I challenge you to find a vieo where they jumped less than 60ft high and then wonder why their $800 car snapped in half!

because Bhudda was wrong..
People are Evil and need to be taught to be nice...most people slept through that class...
people enjoy seeing other people suffer...
now...this part, bhudda was spot on... Life is a plain (plane) of suffering.....well...as long as it is someone elses....
Oh..wait....I would type more, but there was a crash in the NASCAR race that I need to go see

Look at it this way, without carnage, there would be a lot less new planes at the field and life would get pretty boring. So out of wreckage comes new planes, and new excitement.

It's like a treasure hunt and to see what kinda damage it's in and where and what it hit. Look at Nascar most people just watch it for the crashes. ( Or some I should say)

hence F1 is losing out to rallying in popularity. It's good to see how something breals up, learn about weak spots in a build, or how well a piece of something took the impact.
Or, maybe I'm talking mince and I get the same out of it as everyone else.

It's the circle of life. Kinda like BROWNKNOWS said, crashed airplanes brings forth new life (new airplanes).
It's also a sacrifice to the RC gods in the sky. We must all sacrifice one airplane to the gods.

RE: Why do people like to see carnage?
Individually people are great but in groups humans can really suck. We see a LOT of crashes at our field and very few people rush out to see a wreck but once it is brought back to the pitts a crowd usually gathers like vultures. Usually just friends will come help you carry the wreckage and it seems that it is out of respect that they do. If I go help someone carry in the pieces and know that the plane ment a lot to them then the only thing to say is, "sorry about your plane" and than I just shut up. The last thing people want to hear is, "what happened?" because the obvious answer is, "I just crashed my plane you so and so!" Having seen the mob mentality at work so many times I make a consious effort to resist the urge to go look at the wreckage untill the crowd disapates but, I am human and have the same morbid curiosity that everyone else has, I just have learned not to be rude and let that curiosity be more important than the feelings of the person who just lost an expensive toy.

The mob sean is the man's way of thanking that person for sacrificing his airplane to the RC gods in the sky. That is so the rest of the mob can continue to fly the remainder of the day hopefully with out any more sacrifices.

RE: Why do people like to see carnage?
R/C'ers understand that part of the hobby is crashing. We all endure it, some spend their entire life trying to avoid it, others find it jumping into their laps. We want to be able to mentor and assist others, I think a lot of us pilots also believe we can be practicing shrinks!!!
We know how it feels to crash something you really admired, worse yet when you have spent an unbelievable amount of your precious free time to build it in the first place. I have flown some planes for hundreds of flights over years of ownership (a Balsa USA EAA Bipe for example). I have also crashed brand new planes after 3 or 2 flights! You've got to have some type of support group AND an ever-bearing sense of humor! The most macabre discussions we laugh about now started out as trying to keep the pilot from crying in front of his friends!!!!
Of course, cursing seems to help alot![X(]
