A SAD ENDING TO MY TIGER
Hello all,
This is the Great Planes 1/5 scale Tiger Moth painted in accurate scale Tiger Scheme flown in Australia. After nearly 200 hours of work, it was maidened on 7/29/05. The first flight was perfect but not the second one. Less than 1 minute into the second flight with everyone looking on, the plane suddendly went into a hard right turn and impacted on the nose. Such a shame for such a beautiful ship...

RE: A SAD ENDING TO MY TIGER
Hello,
It is quite true that our field is quite nice but there are so many attennas that at times we have radio hits. Our field is near Kirkland AFB and sometimes they test "jamming" device by dropping some sorts of silver flecks in the sky and when that happens, we have radio interferences. In addition, Kirkland tests unmanned vehicle so that too will be a problem for us. We started to see more and more crashes so I wonder if I should pack my bag and go elsewhere....

Sorry about your Tiger Moth Dai Phan. Very nice pics - except for the post crash shots.[]
It does appear repairable though. Hope you can get her going again.

RE: A SAD ENDING TO MY TIGER
I recall your recent post in this forum whereby you discussed how much fun you have turning your transmitter off in flight to see what kind of devastation would result. The list of top-shelf, high-ticket aircraft you've destroyed this way would keep Tower happy for a week. (I see the Moderators have pulled the thread) I'll save my sympathy for someone in the fellowship that truly deserves it. Get a job.

Ouch! Sorry for your loss. Someone once told me that the good looking ones just die sooner.

Sad Loss... I had been following this Airplane in other posts...
GREAT looking flying site, although the interference issues sound really bad...
No way I would fly a 200+ hour Airplane there...

KaosDriver,
You have an excellent memory ! Actually, I started that thread as a joke since at that time, the forum was kind of slow. I am thinking of getting a different transmitter with fail-safe system like the 9C. My Multiplex radio costs an arm and a leg but does NOT offer this intuative feature. Quite strange. DP

RE: A SAD ENDING TO MY TIGER
Hello,
The plane is 90% repaired and looks like it will see another day. It is the weak construction at the front cockpit that saved my day as this broke cleanly of the impact and absorbes much of the energy. As a rule, when I repair a plane, I will always make it better than the original. That being said, I have added the small details like side fuel tanks, air scoppes and strengthened the front cockpit as this is the heaviest part of the plane (24 cell battery location). If you have been follow my threads in other forum, I mentioned that I had some feelings that something will go wrong on that day and it did. I even mentioned that to other flyers and it sure crashed. Not being paranoid, but I believe that there are other senses that we human beings are not fully aware of. DP

RE: A SAD ENDING TO MY TIGER
Woops,
True that I choose to fly despite overwelmed feelings of impending doom. Having checked everything very carefully before flight gives me no reason to doubt. Something about this field that does not "feel" right despite its SPECTACULAR empty space. I am installing the FMA Flight Stabilization system to prevent radio hit in all my planes now. I should have the plane repaired by the end of the week. DP

RE: A SAD ENDING TO MY TIGER
Hi all,
Shown are the WIP repair job pictures. I put back the nose section and strengthened with cross braces and plywood re-enforcement (to be added later). If you look closely on the nose, you will see sharp strips about 1/6 inch wide. That is where the paint has been removed so another UC can be applied to it. Iron will melt the lusterkote paint and makes a mess if paint is not removed. The most effective way to do this is FULL STRENGTH ACETONE , not nail polish remover as it is too weak. Another UC patch is then applied then the black stripes are painted. Use sandpaer to even out those edges and you will be good as new. The masking tape on the lower wing is to prevent over removing of the paints. DP

RE: A SAD ENDING TO MY TIGER
Hello,
The rebuilt will be noticable only by me if I look closely. The most challenging part of this repair project is the matching of the existing yellow color. The paint system I use has undergone new formulation so the new yellow needs to be toned down to match my old system. And yellow is a TOUGH color to paint as it takes at least 5-7 coats to achieve opacity. Many modications were done to improve the airframe strength including carbon fiber rods in wings, plywood panels and cross braces as well as some additional details added. If anyone thinking about flying electrics, you need to beef up the nose section ahead of the foward windshield. The construction is very WEAK in this area. Also new reciever was installed along with different radio. This time, I will record the flight on video so all of you can see it fly. DP

RE: A SAD ENDING TO MY TIGER
I know what the problem was. Tiger Moths are solo'ed from the rear seat. Your pilot bailed out and the front seat passenger did not know how to fly, subsequently leading to the crash. Or, perhaps the plane became too nose heavy after the pilot bailed and the front seater stalled and spun trying to keep the nose up......

Hello,
Now I know the cause of my crash. I assured you that there will be a BACK seat pilot the next time it takes to the air! DP
