RC Airshow Midair - Biplane vs. GeeBee (video)
Occurred at the SCCMAS airshow, July 2005. I initially followed the smokey bit thinking it was an RC skydiver since that biplane has been used as a drop plane before. Turns out it dropped something alright, but it wasn't a skydiver... the biplane had it's engine knocked clean off!

MY HATS OFF TO THE VIDEOGRAPHER..(the guy running the camera) It is very rare to see an incident where the cameraman has enough time, sharp enough eyes, and enough common sense to capture the entire event!!!! In this one he followed the engine to the ground....found the bipe before it crashed and then found the GeeBee before it hit the ground!!!!
FANTASTIC JOB!!!!!!!!!!!

Gee, thanks for the nice compliment Lyle! And tsands too. That was me and my Canon Optura Xi doing the videotaping. I'm glad you liked it. Gives me inspiration to do some more! Like the old saying goes... it's not that I'm hoping for anyone to crash, but if they do, I want to film it!
I should get out there and do more filming/flying but I kind have been in an RC lull this year. I'll get back out there again soon.

They didn't look like they touched. They must have just clipped...
Did the Biplane spin in because it was way out of balance with the engine cut off the front, making a very rear CG?
I love it when GeeBee's crash, its very scale like!! :P

RE: RC Airshow Midair - Biplane vs. GeeBee
Yeah, the GeeBee had some tail damage and was a handfull coming in, plus I think it was deadstick. Those things don't glide so well when all is well so I don't think there was much the GeeBee pilot could do. The GeeBee hit fairly hard, but I didn't get a very close look at the damage. Besides the tail, the huge cowl was damaged heavily and one wing also was battered up pretty good.
The biplane had it's firewall ripped out and one of the wings broke in half at the joiner. They both were probably fixable, but I haven't seen either of them at the field since. I bet the biplane is done as that one has been around a long time and changed owners a few times. It was ready to go. Nice classic WWI death spiral so it went out in style.
Blender - sorry the video didn't work you you. It's a standard .mpg format so Windows Media Player should be able to handle it. I was also able to view it using QuickTime, but I prefer WMP for mpg files. I'm on WMP version 10.
