How long does it take for you to "Get Over" losing a plane?
We've all been there. Crashing a favorite plane is never a good thing to experience, but we all go to the field knowing fully well that every plane is doomed, and sooner or later, our "baby" is going to go on its final flight, then join the long grey line of planes we used to enjoy but is no more.
How do you cope with losing a favorite plane, and how long does it take for you to build up the confidence again to get back up there with another one?

LOL. I lost one of my favorites last year. Graupner Extra 300 in the patty Wagstaff colours. Elevator failure at low level made it hit the ground at a shallow angle and rolled itself back into kit form
So I picked up the pieces, recovered all the re-usable bits and bought...........
Now I have my favorite plane back

About as long as it takes to sweep together the pieces with my "hobby rake" and separate the reusable pieces...
Besides, it's a built in excuse for buying another airplane!

RE: How long does it take for you to "Get Over" losing a plane?
As long as it takes to either rebuild the plane, or get the next one going. For example:
Last weekend, my favorite slow flying fun plane, SPAD Debonair, nosed into the runway while trying to land in a heavy cross-wind (BTW, I was the only one of 14 people present that was willing to fly). Ripped off the landing gear, broke the prop. After some examination, I put the landing gear back on, with some rubber bands to help hold it against the fuse, and was back in the air in half an hour.
Thoroughly demolished a SPAD a week and a half ago. It was one of my favorites. Took two days to get the coro for a rebuild, and I maidened the replacement yesterday.
My GP CAP 232 crashed about two months ago. Destroyed the cowl, severe damage to the nose section, firewall, and some wing sheeting damage. I maidened the repaired plane last weekend when the winds died down for a piece.
No crashed plane is a total loss - its just a question of how much needs to be replaced before it flies again!

Sounds like one of my son's ones, not long after he had gone solo -
It went like this
We swapped planes in mid flight so that I could try and help him determine whether or not the CofG was in the right place on his plane. (Mine had only been maidened the week before - this was about it's 5th flight)
He trashed mine trying a flat spin
He then walked over to me on the flight line and took his plane back over while I went to collect the wreckage.
All up, I guess it took him about 5 seconds to get over it and "get back in the saddle".
(The good part about it is - I can always quote "Remember when you smashed the - - - - " when he starts getting too big for his boots - Oh the vagaries of teenagers and their parents).

RE: How long does it take for you to "Get Over" losing a plane?
I lost the Ultimate in my avatar during it's second flight due to a power switch failure. It was a kit that I spent approx 150 hours on and you would have thought somebody killed a relative it hurt so bad.
It took me about 2 days before I was back on the horse again and after a week I was laughing about it. Admittedly, this was my first crash also so that didn't help matters any.
Since then, I've crashed an ARF once and I was laughing about it as I walked over to pick up the pieces, so I really think it depends on your emotional attachment to the plane due to time spent working on it.

I still haven't completely gotten over the wing snapping off of my H9 SU31 and it's been almost two years. I got past it but not over it.

Depends on how it goes in-
If it is spectacular and I get to watch, and no one gets hurt. After its over I close my eyes and burn the event into my memory. Then I go and pick up the pieces, at this point I am over it.
If I did something dumb and it resulted in a perfectly good model being destroyed... 10 minutes.
If I did something dumb and it resulted in a perfectly good model being badly damaged but it's rebuild-able... The time it takes to get it back in the air.
If I did something dumb and it resulted in a perfectly good model being badly damaged but it's rebuild-able and on the very next flight it crashes because I made an error during rebuilding... The time it takes to get it back in the air + 10 minutes.
If it on a maiden flight... 30 minutes.. and a few words at the crash site..
But this is the most important part- At the moment of disaster it is important that we scream WHO'S ON CHANNEL ## ? or 'I WAS SHOT DOWN' etc... Because we are never to show fault or general stupidity in front of our peers. Otherwise we would have to accept blame for every plane we crash.
The second most important part- When we get home act really saddened by the loss of our 'favorite' model so the wife will see your pain and say 'Go get another'.. When the replacement is her idea it's time to get something really nice.. Like a Jet!!

Broken You are my hero. I have done the exact same thing with my wife. Ah the wonders of predictability. Only in marriage.

10 seconds is a long time. I don't get upset in the first place. This is an expendable hobby. I would like to buy that beautiful F4U Corsair for $4,500.00 from the gentleman in Florida. However, I know that bird could crash and be totaled on her maiden flight, as no one ever really knows what's going to happen with an airplane until you get the nerve to push the throttle forward and pull back on the elevator. I fly them until they expire. The CRUD planes always seem to last the longest.

Dont know yet how long it will take. So far 2 hrs and counting... I loved that plane and have spent loads of hrs building it. I was flying in the dusk, last flight for the evening and BAM... I misjudged the distance and came in behind some trees instead of what I thought in front of em... Spectacular is the least one could say. Balsa all over the place. Engine keept going fwrd for additional 40 yards... I had a close counter recently with trees and thought I learnt the leasson... [X(][]
I guess ARF is looking rather attractive for the moment. I due time however I will build another kit and it will prob be the same I lost today.

RE: How long does it take for you to "Get Over" losing a plane?
I lost my new(4th flight)Goldberg Extra 300 yesterday.Im still kinda kicking myself because it was not"shot down",crashed doing some wild trick,or any of the other excuses we hear. This started when a dumb***** with a computer radio stored 2 models into the memory and tried going back to model 1.The screen never went to pcm mode(1 on pcm other on ppm),so it had to in the radio, right.I fooled around and found a reset prompt, guess what, wipesd out plane 1s settings. No problem, just re test fly it.Checked everything, set the throws again, went flying.Took off, plane dropped the left wing a little while climbing out so I push the stick to the right and it went further left, rolled into the ground. My thought went right to the ailerons, yep, didnt reverse them. So,I dont know if Ill ever get over that one.First crash ever for me and it was totally on me.Oh well, gotta find a new kit,I got to have another on of those.

There is not even a tail left from my crash... [:@] I am thankful for having the engine in one piece.

RE: How long does it take for you to "Get Over" losing a plane?
While crashes are now a rarity I recall that sickening feeling I had after a bad crash. But I learned after each crash too. I kit build for the most part so I reverse engineer to determine how to improve the next one. And some crashes were outside of my control.. ie someone turns on a radio on the same frequency. I eventually came to accept crashes as part of the game and and to see that for every rekit there are savagable parts that can be reused for the next one. We all crash, I think we all mourn but don't let a crash stop you from getting back into the saddle.
One of my student pilots did ok on his trainer.. and after he soloed he managed to keep the plane in the air for about 1 year. He broke it may times but patched and reflew. He then moved up to a low wing P51.. way outside of his experience level both in building and in flying. It lasted about 30 secs after he took the sticks. He kept building and crashing even though I tried to explain that he needed to progress more slowly. By the third year he had settled on kadet senior that he had good success with allowing him a lot of good stick time. He now has flown for 5 years and can manage a super sportster and a chipmunk. Guess my point is that confidence is acquired through good experience.
Best regards,
Randy

Well the longest has been two days with my beloved two year old ultra fly 182's wind broke off in mid flight due to old epoxy. I get over the loss mostly very fast epically with GWS models

I'm finding that I get more ANGRY than anything else...
You know that feeling in the PIT of your stomach where you just wish you were TWO YEARS OLD AGAIN and could just throw youself flat on the ground start kicking and screaming throw a tantrum.....let that go on for 30 seconds or so...
Stand up..dust yourself off....THEN GO COLLECT THE PIECES...!!
You know that feeling?????ell...Huh......
Ok...so I must be slightly brain damaged....
