Don't ask me how I did this...
...because I'm not sure I could tell you! One second I was flying fine, the next I had lost orientation and drove it into the ground. Plane was a Sig Somethin' Extra, now it's Somethin' Else!

Easy rebuild; looks like most of the BIG parts are there. Put her back together, rebalance, pre-flight, and fly her again. Don't get disoriented again. Always watch the position of the tail and the angle of the wing. Don't forget to keep your brain ahead of your airplane. This will help fight against disorientation. Good luck.

Dan,
That repair is dooable, not easy or quick but dooable. Next time you lose orientation try a little "waggle" action. Say what you say? Take the ailerons and move them back and forth SLOWLY that should tell you what is going on. I still do that, being the genius that I am, I can still find the sun... like the planes got a friggin magnet on the spinner!![:@] It goes a little something like this: 1) Fly right into the sun 2) Go Blind 3) Crap your pants 4) Panic 5) "Waggle" a little 6) Pull it together 7) Get her on the ground, and finally 8) Go change your shorts!!!

PS Bubba love that catch phrase, ain't that the truth!

RE: Don't ask me how I did this...
Its easy to understand how it happens. Last Sunday I nearly lost my Cap 232 when I lost orientation in the hazy sky. I was planning a 1/2 cuban 8 to turn around, and somewhere near the top of the loop, the plane snapped on me (to much elevator). when it came out, it was on a course 90 degrees off from where I started. Recognizing that it wasn't going where I wanted, I let go of the controls to try to determine attitude. The plane was completely silhouetted, and was flying level, so I thought it was upright. I banked right and applied up elevator to turn back toward the field. Lo and behold, the plane was actually inverted!! Now it was diving toward the trees. I released the elevator and ailerons, then rolled the plane 180. I applied the up elevator again (once again, to much elevator). Again the plane snapped over on me and started diving toward the trees again!!! As my adrenaline level increased, I slowly added up elevator, and the plane recovered with about 20 feet to spare over the trees. Needless to say, I got the plane back up where it belonged, and just flew a few patterns for about 7 minutes to calm my nerves, and then landed. I flew at the other end of the field for the rest of the afternoon to stay out of the haze.
I've been flying this plane all summer, and am completely aware of its tendencies. Just one instant of full elevator at the wrong time nearly drove the balsa back to its roots.

Brad,
Yep, I'd say that plane had a thing for the trees. [sm=confused_smile.gif]
Just a word on a Cap that snaps like yours, try lowering the elevator throws. You'd be surprised just how little you need and how quickly the plane will stop snapping on you.
To give you an example, my 27% GP Cap uses 3/8th of an inch on low rates and it will go from straight and level to a full vertical pullup so fast it will make your head spin and it will do it without snapping. If I switch to mid-rates, the throw is now set to 5/8th inch and if I am going too fast and plant the elevator, it will snap hard to one side, most likely whatever wing was lower. But if I do it at a relatively slow speed it will not snap

RE: Don't ask me how I did this...
Thanks for all the advice and encouragement everyone. I won't be rebuilding this one because I already used most of it to christen our new burn barrel at the field. That and having a photo to post in the crash forum pretty much makes up for the loss of the plane! Maybe I'll build another one someday, maybe not. There are so many other planes to build first. I've already got plans for the engine and electrics, kinda nice not to have to buy new to get another plane in the air.

Hey Robcar,
Sorry it's taken me awhile to reply, been busy at work! We formed The Chenango RC Club a couple of years ago and we've been hard at work on our club field in Columbus, NY ever since. This photo was taken last summer and we've since added fencing between the pits and the spectator area/parking lot as well as a few other improvements. It really is a beautiful spot to fly from, it's the top of a hill and you look out over the valley with nothing but sky in front of you. Columbus is only a couple of miles from Sherburne so it's not that much farther for you, come on over! Here's a link to our website too www.chenangorc.net
