Thanks for the great photos, Dean!!
This was a bad incident but you capturing it and displaying for the world to see is more than one nail in the Markham Park Field coffin. I know you like to loiter around the air field for some strange reasons but when you come back and see some saw horses blocking the road you can credit yourself for helping get the field closed. I'll find somewhere else to fly but I hope it is on private land so I can get you and your Nikon removed if you ever darken that airstrip
sounds like someone is trying to stir trouble????[sm=confused.gif]

So what was the reason the jet crashed?
Was it a turbine or ducted fan engine?

Looks to me like the Pilot Station fence did exactly what it was designed to do.........

PROTECT THE PILOTS, and the planes in the pits!!!!

Yep,...that should end the "Should we have a safety fence" debate

Just remember fellas, you never know when or how it will happen. I lost a plane 2 weeks ago and it almost hit the pilot station and the pit area and I was trying to ground it as soon as I noticed a problem. Too bad about the plane, hope everyone was OK..

i nearly whacked my instructor (after i had soloed and was on my 3rd? solo flight) on final, i got disorented and turned the wrong way. it hit the flight line fence (they were thinking of taking it out cause it was getting in the way and they had a larger fence behind it and my crash let it stay), my avistar surprisingly flew again that same day without any repairs except putting on a new prop. but it was a crash that could have been prevented and ive scince learned from my mistakes. but i agree those fences protect the pilots and other planes that in other surcomstances would have been hit. and that jet looks like it wasnt as lucky. but odds are its bound to happen to anyone.

That particular crash has had its debate on RCU. It flamed out after what may have been ESD. It is unclear.

I don't think it is wrong to post any pics of airplanes crashing. I do know that turbines are always "in the hot seat." We turbine pilots know this and appreciate this. Even I've posted pics of my crashes. But I use descretion as well. I'd never post a pic of my jet going up in smoke. Even if it did happen at a private non ama field, like it did!!

For every one's info, not a single claim has been sent to the AMA for a turbine related fire, death or injury, only prop airplanes. What does this mean? Everyone buy a turbine!!! WOO hooo!!!

At least the pilot stations are substantial, I have seen some around here that are PVC posts with the plastic orange construction fence around them...

We have a fixed timber post with wire mesh flight line. This keeps all the pilots within the same aread and in earshot of each other (chit chat often keeps pilots aware of what the other is doing) and if something does come in there is time to yell a warning and dive below the fenceline. If anything hits it will be shredded (minimising the severity of any injury). The pit area is also protected by similar fencing, and it has done it's job at least twice in recent years.

Those individual pilot stations using PVC tubing and plastic construction fence are dangerous IMO. For example, you spread six pilots over a wide area who aren't paying much attention to each other and now you have six targets to hit and little communication between pilots. Yes, you may have spotters but not every club requires them (we limit 5 planes in the air at a time...at 5 aircraft a single spotter/Air traffic controller comes into play).

I haven't seen that style of pit fence (PVC and plastic mesh) used anywhere else but in the US. It's unlikely they'd stop much beyond a medium speed impact with a light ARF. Doubt they'd ever be allowed at most clubs and DEFINITELY wouldn't be permitted anywhere jets are flying.

I appreciate how handy the PVC stations can be AND that they may offer a little protection but.....

A light and fast pylon racer went through 2 sheets of 3/4 inch plywood and killed a spotter inside the spotter station at an event.

I don't know about orange netting and pvc etc.

Seems like it's not fun if you can't get killed doing it, though. Bill

The link dosen't work, this happened at markham correct? I find staying inside the stations annoying as it kinda makes it harder to see my plane, but if that flimsy fence can keep a jet from hitting you, then its worth it!

Good point. Something is better than nothing, unless it gives a false sense of safety, I guess.

... but like I said, it seems if you can't get killed doing it, it's not fun!

Hope you guys know I'm kidding, kinda.
