TCRCFASB Identification: ACSC003003 .

Accident occurred : Saturday, January 25, 2003 at Anderson, SC
Aircraft : Hobbico Superstar .40
Engine : ASP 46
Pilot: Rick
Injuries: 0 None.

This is preliminary information, subject to change, and may contain errors. Any errors in this report will be corrected when the final report has been completed.

On January 25, at approximately 1630 Atlantic standard time, a Hobbico Superstar .40 nonregistered homebuilt hybrid airplane, was damaged following impact with terrain in Anderson, SC. The private pilot was not injured. The owner/pilot was operating the airplane under Title 14 CFR Part 103. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the personal flight that originated from BASF Field approximately 6 minutes before the accident. No flight plan had been filed.

The aircraft was observed entering a sharp turning dive at which time the pilot over rotated becoming inverted. The aircraft remained in this nose down, inverted position until its impact with terra firma. Damage was significant resulting in 90% destroyed fuselage and broken wing.

Addendum: The pilot reported increasing throttle to complete sharp turn and believed excessive speed led to the plane being slightly sensitive.
Addendum: Spectators reported seeing the plane exit turn for final at which time the plane over rotated and went in nose first.

The Tri-County RC Flyers Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows:

INSUFFICIENT ALTITUDE FOR RECOVERY.. PILOT IN COMMAND DISORIENTED

Hey Ben, if you want a little more durable trainer-type plane, check out the following plans:

http://www.spadtothebone.com/SPAD/Spadet/

You should be able to salvage stuff from the crashed plane to put into this one!

Heh,

These arent my crashes, these are my father-in-law. I have managed to repair "most" of his damage ad he is on flight 15 on his new bird.

I havent tried a SPAD yet but plan to after I finish the planes I have in construction now.

as the fellow that started this 'trend' I have to weigh in.

Every club I've ever belonged to kept a log of who crashed what, when, and why. Sometimes to award a 'broken spar award' at the end of the year or just for newsletter filler material.

I've decided to write up every crash I witness at our field this year using a format similar to the one the NTSB uses. (Link? http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/month.asp ) We don't have a newsletter per se, so I've been posting them here.

BTW - BenWillis:
On January 25, at approximately 1630 Atlantic standard time
Since you're in SC shouldn't that be Eastern standard time?
Or did you correct for the timezone?

This reminds me - I have another trainer wreck to write up
