My OS-91 & 9/4 carbon simprop did this. That's bloody gratitude for ya. First time I'd treated her to a dose of synthetic.

I really MUST get an electric starter!
I have always flicked up my engines, and up to now with no incidents. Mind you it was -1 and I couldn't feel my fingers.... Even after slicing them to the bone. I jumped back, dropped the transmitter & my World Models P-51D shot off down the strip like a demon. I managed to hit the throttle cut with my right hand just as I watched the plane dissapear into the long grass at the edge of our runway.
Can't even pick my nose properly now!

Been there, done that. I currently have six stiches in the fatty part of my hand just below my thumb. I have an electric starter and they are nice, but I cut my hand trying to adjust the @$%@!%&*# carb. Keep flying, just be careful.

chicken sticks
After almost taking the tip of my finger off flipping one by hand, I took a short piece of broomhandle, ground it to a tight fit, and drove a short piece of garden hose on it. it's slightly longer and beefier than the ones sold at the LHS, but it saves the 'nose-miners'. Hope you heal soon.

Lord help us.. I had a "Senior moment" and stuck my hand into a Saito 56 while running it in on a test bench.
Are we getting old and forgetful. Our wives remind us of this from time to time.
35 stitches..in my left three fingers..fortunately we have Wild Turkey as a conslation,
Lord I'm sore tonight, guys, but I'm not giving up on our hobby.
Thank the Lord it was a wood prop.

I've been in this hobby for twenty years without an injury. Last week I cut the end of my thumb off while making tacos.
I'm not planning to give up RC...or eating.

One of my bonehead moves was with an airboat with no prop guard. I go put it in the river and the nose goes down, I try to grab it to get it back and what do I grab? The 11x8 APC prop at ~3500 rpm. My fingers were bruised and sore for a few days but that was it.

A very old and now deceased friend taught me to use very exaggerated movements around the front of the plane. It may look a little odd to swing your arms around in big arc's, but after twenty years I've avoided some of the aforementioned problems.

On second thought, maybe not. If you were to swing your arms around in big arcs while making tacos you might have lost your whole hand instead of the end of your thumb.

PullUpPullup...that is the funniest thing I've heard in a long time. If you lived closer I'd buy you a beer. Thanks for knocking me off my soap box.

You could shave with some of the carbon/synthetic props I've used before. Did it just cut from the sharpness? Or did it catch you when it fired up?
The guy at my LHS showed me his hand the day I bought my plane and after seeing his fingers (he's like 60 years old) I bought a chicken stick... Even dull props will ruin your guitar playing days.
I never had a prop catch me, but I did end up in the ER a few months ago after flying.
I had to huff it out to the middle of the field to retrieve my plane. When I got back to the pits I was so shagged out I just plopped down very un-coordinatedly. I ended up landing on my thumb and bent it backwards to my arm.
That was a fun day, packing my stuff up when the swelling started, and driving to the ER. I can laugh about it now though.
Hey did they make you fill out your own paperwork when you went to the ER? I had to do it left handed...
I took the splint off a week later for a peek

My thumb was blue with bruising at my palm, and my fingers were swollen still.

Okay Okay get this. Not trying to one up anyone here but. Last year in late January 2002 my father in law and I were at the flying field and I put my plane in a tree.
Yes again!
On the way back to the flight line my FIL had to stop several times to catch his breath, four days later he underwent quad bypass surgery.
I'm going to pickup a leather glove in the morning before I start up my ST 3000 for the season. Thanks for the reminder.

I felt like I was going to have a heart attack when I went to retrieve my dazzler. I was totally out of breath and lightheaded. The next guy who crashed went out to retrieve the plane in his SUV, which is what I will do the next time it's more than a few meters away.
Anybody have a golf cart or something for retrieval at their club? Would make a good investment, especially if there are handicapped or senior citizens in the club.
