Default Advices on Spar repair

I posted in the extreme speed plane forum about my patriot xl damage to the spar. Does anybody can tell me what are the "rules" for spar repairs? Does one have to remove the entire spar or can he just replace the damaged section?

Thank you for your inputs,

Le fou

ive repaired damaged spars with out replacing them by using carbon fiber along say the back and bottom to form a L .010 thick about 1/2 long on each side of the break,ca in place stronger than the original wood.

Aerowoof,

Thank you for your reply. I am not sure I understnad what you mean by the L? If I understand correctly, I need to put some carbon fiber on the side of the spar and on the top and/or bottom of it? I made a quick dwg to illustrate what I am trying to say (the blue shows the top and bottom spars and the red shows the L shaped carbon fiber).

Thanks,

Le fou

Or you can cut out the damaged section and fashion another spar out of wood.

You can splice any spar to do a repair by making a diagonal cut that is 8 to 12 longer than the thickness of spar.

Hi,

What highplains and aerowoof said. Splice and then being a belts and braces man I splint with ply or CF. Now we just need Minn to chip in with a diagram.

Cheers,

Colin

Minn does not crash so he will likely not be here
