Maiden crash flight of the VQ models Hurrican (*Pics*)
So last friday i went to maiden my new VQ models .60 sized hurricane with split flaps,working lights and retracts. It has a GMS .61 it has good power. When i taxied it around it performed flawless, when i did my 3rd flight check the engine loaded up a bit but it quickly went away, I taxied out, The wind was calm, the engine sounded good and was idleing well, so eased the throttle up to full and pulled back on the elevator and it lifted off 10 feet in the air level to the runway..perfect! when all the sudden the engine sputtered and shut off![X(] when i was in a left bank turn 30 feet off the ground! I quickly eased off the alerions and ruddered it left so i wouldnt lose too much airspeed, the airplane tip stalled and made a sharp dive left and landed on the right wing and nose dived into the ground at 45mph I wasnt a happy camper i had 500.00 worth of wood laying on the field...well i was doing to trash it but after speeding $500 on the airplane i decided to try and rebuild it with epoxy..well 60 hours later and 24beers down, I finished the rebuild process...she aint pretty but she will fly, its my frankinstein airplane. I had to rebuild the engine mount because that was totally crushed and hanging off there was no wood mounts so i had to jerry rig it, the right wing was broken in half but wasnt too bad it was already bad enough..I was surprised how well the epoxy did, the plane didnt gain too much extra weight due to me using epoxy where wood once was...the structure is sound..I fueled it up and taxied it in my drive way and tested it at full throttle for 3 minutes and the engne mount held up! I'm sure it will be fine to fly,I will give a flight report soon, if i dont crash again! Here are some pics of the rebuild[&:]

Generally, "horsing" a warbird up in 10 feet is just asking for trouble. Try easing into the throttle and using a little down elevator to build up ground speed before giving up elevator. Then even if the engine dies at a very bad time you may have enough airspeed to nose her down and flare it in.

Hate to say it but the crack in the wing here looks like it might break off again with the air pressures of flying. I would fill it more completely with 30-minute epoxy and then throw a strip of covering over it.

yeah! when i rebuilt it i not only epoxyed the outside but also the inside, you cant see it but i have 4 4inch wood blocks going across the crack to form a support beam, its rather sturdy

yeah i stalled it out and the engine didnt help, im used to my over powered airplanes, this one is nor overpowered yet

Sorry for what happen. Just today with my P51 on it first flight the motor stalled on a touch and go. had to land it the brush, luck there was no damage. It seems when you think everything is ok something happens and changes the hole thing. Just keep moving forward and have fun lots of fun..

I think you mean Duct tape?
Did you hold the plane nose high with the engine at both idle and full throttle to see if it leans out when vertical?
Seen a lot of people take off without performing that test and have dead sticks almost as soon as the wheels leave the ground. Or when doing a long upline.

I would like to pinpoint the CG which is very critical in this airplane. This should be nose heavy at 1/4 of the airfoil at the saddle. (you measure it upside down). I have flown this VQ bird converted with electric motor and since it is a tailheavy structure I recomend an evaluation of your CG. When you built this model tail heavy you have exactly what you have described (abrupt and sudden tip stall )..
Your rebuild is good and I hope that your next flight will end up good. It doesn't matter how your airplane looks as long as it is a stable and good flier. So keep on flying and maybe you can make a nose art "Frankestein Hurri"

well long story short, i tried to maiden it 3 times and it just didnt fly right, so on the last flight it was all over the place still tail heavy even with 11oz of lead on the nose....it crashed and didnt really tear anything up but i just said to heck with it and harvested the parts from it and put it in another airplane that flys very well! thanks for all the Questions and help!
