thin fibreglass repair question
1 Attachment(s)
Hey i attempted a maiden flight of my edge 540 last weekend. It did not go as planed. I need advice on fixing the large cowel that covers the motor. i has a few cracks and one hole by the spinner.
Any advice on how to begin the repair? What to use? |
RE: thin fibreglass repair question
Start by removing the cowl, clean the inside with laquer thinner or acetone, scuff the inside with 80 grit sandpaper, then lay-up some 6 oz epoxy/glass cloth on the inside. This will give you a solid base to do repairs to, next, you have 2 options, either plastic filler on the outside(bondo) or mix up some epoxy with micro-ballons, but you must first grind out the gelcoat cracks, otherwise the cracks will be real tough to hide. Main reason is it's a sharp break in the surface, that is hard to keep from opening again. So open the crackes up and fill them back with either plastic filler or epoxy/microballon paste and let dry. Then go to town and sand it smooth, prime and paint, it will take longer than just CA'ing it back together, but yeild a better, more durable finish that will live the life of the model.
