Agree with you. Gimp (the GNU Image Manipulation Program) first appeared way back in 1996, and has been regularly updated ever since, so it's no surprise that the package is the most powerful free photo editor that you'll find anywhere. There are tools to correct colours, enhance contrast, brightness and more; sharpen or blur an image, fix perspective problems, remove red-eye; add special lighting effects, turn a photo into an oil painting, and create an animation. The paint tools alone are amazing, there's full layer support and lots of ways to extend the program.

FYI: I have used Photoshop for a many years in my photo studio. Love what I can do with it, hate the company. If you just shoot jpegs or convert your pics to the adobe dng you are fine. But, if you shoot raw you need to buy a new version of Photoshop everytime you get a new camera. Photoshop looks for certain models of cameras in the meta data and if it doesn't recognize it the file will not open. Adobe has been asked by camera manufacturers to offer updates - Either free or for money - But they have refused to consider it. This policy guarantees more people will pirate the program rather than buy. Both Photoshop and the open source programs have similar learning curves. Cost wise the open source programs are a much better choice in the long run - If they will do what you need them to do.
