Default LiPo for Mega 16/15/5

I have a mega 16/15/5 in my Zagi. I have a 18 amp TMM speed controller. I wanted to get a LiPo Pack. Would 3 cells give me too much current draw with a 7 x 4 prop? I want to give LiPo's a try, I currently use the Zagi stock 1700 packs.

According to Motocalc 7.09 using your setup with a typical 3 cell 2100 lipo battery the current draw should be about 19.4 amps with about 6 minute + of flight time. Using a high discharge rate 8 cell 1800 mah nimh the amps would be about 14 and a flight time of 8 + minutes. I have used lipos in my Overlord wing with a Mega 16/15/4 but they are really expensive if damaged during combat.
Try this link for great packs for Zagi's , look at the 1400, 1800 and 2100 red CBP batteries the 1800 weigh about the same as you 1700 pack but at a much discharge rate. Try Cheap Battery Packs .com

The Mega 16/15/5 draws about 16amps on 8 cells with a 7x4 prop. The motor can handle bursts up to 20amps.

A 3-cell Lithium pack should work fine but I would recommend using the right cell based upon your flying skills. If you use good throttle management with a cell that can deliver 20amps continuous current, your setup should work fine.

I would use either the Kokam 2AH (20C) cells that can deliver 30amps continuous or the newer ThunderPower 2100mAh cells that can deliver 21amps continuous.

Be sure that you have proper air cooling on the Mege motor. You'll get a 10% offload in the air from any static measurement.

Good luck!

I have a similar question. I have a Mega 16/15/3 and a Castle Creations PHX-45. I'll be using this set-up on a XE2 Combat Wing and would like to use LiPo's. I know prop size will determine my current draw and plane to start using a 5x5 prop. My question is are there LiPo's that can handle this combo?

Thanks,
Tom

I have a Mega 16/15/3 with 5x5 prop on a 48" Overlord wing and use a Kokam 3 cell 2000 15c lipo, I get about 7 - 9 minutes at medium to full throttle. I had to rebalance the wing I was using an 8 cell 2100 mah pack that weighed 11.2 oz and the lipo weighs 6.3 oz. Make sure your esc low voltage cutoff is set to 9.0.

Thanks for the info. It looks like all of those places have competitive prices.

Hey RickAvery, I see you live a few miles from me. Where do you fly. One of my buddies lives in Moorpark and we sometimes fly at a perk on Peach Hill Rd. At least I am pretty sure that is the name of the road. We have Zagis and park fliers that we fly there.

Hey Ralgh, its a little more than a few miles lol. I was just down there today, I'm over in Oak Park. Rick doesn't need to go anywhere to fly, he's fortunate to have 10 acres of RC FUN! grr!!! lucky!!!!

Ralph,
I live in kind of the unincorporated part of Moorpark North of Somis, off of Balcom Cyn. I think it would be great to meet you and your buddies out where you go and have a flyfest! My bro-in-law and I have wings and park fliers also. Sounds like fun for everyone. Let me know when you’re going out and if you don’t mind, I’d like to go if my sched. allows. We might even get Steven aka Fatal Flyer, out here.

Ohhh yea!! I'm ready to go! None of your buddies are on channel 51 are they? A wing fly fest, sounds like a blast!

Rick I'm ordering the new CBP 2500 nimh A cell, its the same weight as the 2100 A cell, but with more duration! Heheheh
Lets go flying again this weekend

I liked my /6 on 3s2p Etec 9x6. did pull my 606gram Formosa vertical with ease. at only 20 Amps or so. those motors can handle huge power loads. they are very rough too, soecially the Combat version with 5mm axle.
