Default The right Li-po?

Ok, I admit I'm a newbie to electric flying. I need help picking out a li-po battery for my soon to be plane. Here's the setup: GWS ME 109, Himax 2015-4166 brushless with 6.6:1 gear ratio. I plan on using a CC25 ESC and have no idea about what prop size and li-po to use. I hope to get around 12-15 min of flight, or more. Also, I was looking at the Electrifly li-pos as they are somewhat cheaper. Are they any good? I despritely need advice on what li-po i need for this setup, please help!

It would help to know which prop you are going to use as that will help determine the amp draw from the battery. I myself like the TP1320 or the TP2100 and brushless I go with 3-cells. I have motocalc to help determine the amp draw of different props for the batteries if you decide on a prop and need help.

Use the prop that came with the GWS kit. I believe it came with a 9x7 SloFlyer prop and a 10x6 HD prop. Either one will work.

Most other Himaxx 2015-41XX applications I've read about run a 3S LiPoly pack. That is, three cells in series, and if I recall correctly, the current runs right around 12 Amps or so when you swap it in in place of the stock 300 can motor.

First and foremost, you'll want a pack that can handle 12 Amps. LiPoly packs are rated in terms of C, or capacity. A pack rated at 10C with a capacity of 1200mAh can handle 12000mA, or 12 Amps. There are plenty of packs on the market that can handle 12 Amps. The Kokam 1500, Great Planes Electrifly 1200, and others.

well, I got the SlopeGlider kit so there isn't a prop included. But assume I go with the 9x7 SloFlyer prop or 10x6 HD prop; which would be better for the set-up discibed above: electrifly 1200mAh 11.1v 3 cell or the electrifly 1500mAh 11.1 3 cell?

I use the Kokam 11.1v 1500 with an e-flite 400 (which i think is the equivalent of the Himax 2025-4100), CC 25 ESC, and a GWS 9070 prop at 6.6 ratio in a GWS Spitfire. Flies great here in Colorado at 6000ft. I don't have a Wattmeter, so I don't know the amp draw, but motor and battery come in only slightly warm after 10-15 minutes of 2/3 throttle flights. I thought about using a 1200 or 1300 battery, but found the 1500 on sale. I needed to enlarge the battery compartment a bit prior to joining the fuselage halves, but it fits nice and snug.

kevromeh,

Which battery you choose will depend on how many Amps the motor is drawing. I'm not 100% sure, but I think we need to figure on 12 Amps.

What are the C ratings of each of those electrifly batteries? The C rating times the capacity of the pack will tell you how many Amps it's capable of handling. If the C rating times the capacity equals 12 Amps, then it'll work.

matt,
I'm not sure exactly what the c ratings are, but the max discharge on the 1500mAh 11.1v is 12.0A. and the 1200mAh 11.1 is 9.6. If these are the numbers I'm supposed to be looking at then I'm going to go with the 1500mAh. Actually I was thinking of going with the 1500mAh just to be safe anyway...its only $5 more. Thanks for you help.
