Default battery cycling

what is the purpose of cycling a nicad, nimh or lipoly battery? is it necessary or can you get the maximum performance from a battery with out cycling it?

Default RE: battery cycling

For a LiPo: Nothing.

For NiCd: Bringing voltage fully up and down e.g. 3 times may increase the "capasity" and freshing up the batteries. Especially if the cykling is done close to max ampere the batteries can handle if you usually charges at 1/10C... Using a good computer-charger (like Schulse) the batteries get in better shape. Sometimes you hear about the "memory"-effect, but this effect usually only occurs when done in labs to provocate this effect. I think cykling 2 times a year is necessary, both to keep the batteries in shape, and most of all to read out from my charger what the real capasity is.

NiMh: These are, as I see them, total impossibel to rely on without cykling them after just 2-3 months of storing... I do not use NiMh, and remember that they should NEVER be used in TX/RX-systems when temp is low... Strange batteries, OK for motors but...
