Default Watt's Up Meter before or after ESC?

The included documentation says to put the ESC and battery on one side of the meter and the motor on the other. The online manual says to put the battery on one sde and the ESC and motor on the other. Which is correct? Does it matter?

If I put the meter after the ESC I have three wires (red/black/white) from the motor to connect to two wires on the meter (red/black), so do I just hook them up by color and leave the white empty?

Thanks!
