Default Spot welding batteries

It is possible to spot weld loose NiMH or NiCD cells?

That is the way most manufacturers of packs connect them.

Are the nickel tabs spot welded on to the buttons of the battery before or after they are manufactured? I have access to a local welding company and i wanna get my batteries spot welded....
